Revell's Vikinship
Posted by DanCooper on Saturday, June 18, 2011 4:08 PM

Hello people,

I realize I haven't been around here for ages, sorry for that, but now I'm back :)

As the first model to present you with my return I'm building Revell's 1/50 Vikingship (although, I remember reading somewhere once that the scale isn't correct).  I started this model about a week ago, and although there isn't a large partslist, it goes slowly due to my choice of paints.  I have decided to experiment with artist's oil paints instead of the classic modelpaints.  In fact the only modelpaints used on this model will be Tamiya White Primer and AS-7 (Neutral Grey).  All other paints are oilpaints, mainly Italian Earth (aka Sienna Natur), a touch of Burned Sienna Light, a touch of Burned Umber, and a touch of Raw Umber.

This is the boxart :

The sprue containing two halves of the hull :

The two halves put together :

And with the deck in them :

A few supports glued onto the deck (the mast hasn't been glued yet, neither is the deck glued into the hull atm) and all have been given a layer of white primer and neutral grey (the latter isn't really obvious from the pictures due to poor lighting) :

First I planned to do deckplank per deckplanck with the oilcollors, but that wasn't to my sattisfaction, so after a couple of planks a decided to do the whole deck as one piece instead (with the exeption of the blocks holding mast and supports (because I will do them a bit darker later on)).

Yesterday I started on one half of the hull, and put the hull in the oven to reduce the drying time of the oilpaints a bit :

Tomorrow, I'll try to do the second half of the hull and I'll try to remember to take some pics of the process as well :)

... if Facebook and Zynga don't get me hooked again :/

Cheers

mmm-mmm toasty!! Great effect on the hull with the oil paints. It may be slow going but it looks great.

The effect with oils is very nice, and I have found it suprisingly simple to master.

To reduce the drying time of oils (and to increase the ease with which the paint flows around) try adding a product called 'liquin' to the paint- it usually makes oils touch dry in around 1-3 days instead of 5+

Dan, that is incredible work.  I just received the same kit last week and think I will follow your lead and use artistic oils.  I do have some questions though!

1. Did you prime everything first with an enamel primer.  I know you primed and painted the deck but how about the hull?

2. Are you using a dry brush paint method after applying small dollops of the paint and then blending together?

Looking forward to more pictures of the build and thanks!

Hello RoDC, yes I've primed everything with Tamiya White Primer, and after that I also sprayed light grey over it (also Tamiya).

I applied the dots and smear of the oil colors onto the hull, and used a moist brush (white spirit) to blend everything together.  During the blending I see if it needs a more of this or that color, if needed, I just take a second brush and apply an extra dot.

Looking forward to your built :)
