Full hull display ideas??

I use clear acrylic rod to make a couple of posts.  It is sort of the opposite to the ornate brass posts (which I used to use like everyone else).  I have gone exclusively to the clear acrylic now.  For smaller models one of the plastic suppliers has them in its regular line found on those racks, in 1/4 inch diameter. I also build some larger 1:96 and 1:192 scale.  These take larger posts so I occasionally order another half inch "dowel" and keep it in stock.  Half inch holds a pretty large, heavy (solid wood) model.

One of my ship models (the whaleback Laker) at     http://www.usfamily.net/web/stauffer/shipmod.html         shows what this mounting looks like, though I use longer ones on most models.  The whaleback just cried out to be a little lower than most.

Hi , I have top go along with DON on this.The only difference is I use the square acrylic rod than has been twisted . It seems to impart ,(to me anyway) a more finished look . There are times that I will use clear walls and do one dry dock style with the keel blocks and bilge braces . The other method of which DON speaks is really great for sailing ships as it gives them more stability and less heighth if you put them on keel blocks .The other method is to semi-duplicate the supplied stands using clear acrylic instead of the supplied stands . There are many preffered types that folks like .I guess it all works out to which one you find that suits your tastes.       tankerbuilder

Thats nice. Do you fasten the rod to the hull or just sit it on loose?

Though not an exclusive practice, I often simply display my builds on the kit provided stand on small shelf from Lowe's.  Especially the smaller ships like DDs, etc..  I figure I can always go back and epoxy lamp finials to the bottom of the hull and attach them to a piece of wood if I want to do that.

I very carefully mark the locations , more than ONCE .I also make sure the top has the contour of the ship,s bottom . Then drill a hole where each post goes .Now that acryllic can be gently threaded with a thread cutter .Build steps on the inside so the bolt will go straight down into the stand columns .Do NOT over thighten them !. Now there you go . If you wish you can leave a little " wiggle " room and put a piece of dark foam between the stand pieces and the hull .This would allow you the screw the stand posts tight to the ship  after you,re done with the ship . You then take a piece of wood you,ve sanded ,  trimmed and marked with the post locations .Take a chisel and dig out the shape for a minimum of 1/4 inch . Put epoxy in the holes and carefully place the posts (with the ship attached ) and place them in the depressions .Let cure and enjoy           tankerbuilder
