Ark Models 'Goto Predistinatsia '- unknown sailing ship model?
Posted by Billyboy on Monday, July 25, 2011 10:31 AM

I saw this in a model shop in this country. It looks interesting. Certainly this purports to be a plastic scale model of an early 18th century Russian ship of the line, the Goto Predistinatsia. The scale looks 'off' (it'd be much bigger than the box if it was correct!), but I dont recognise the mouldings? (Ark models usually re-box older toolings like Frog or Heller- just like Eastern Express and other manufacturers like that.)

Anyone care to comment. I found a Russian 'in box' review here.

Parts of it look a little ropey, but the overall proportions and detail doesn't look bad. I would wager it was in the 1/150 scale range probably.

Any comment?

Found a set of plans for the Goto Predistinatsia online, and the model certainly looks like it is the same vessel. Without knowing the dimensions of the model I can't say for certain what the scale is though.

It appears that this model originates with Soviet era company 'Spark' and is generally well regarded in Russia as 'an old one, but a good one'. It was one of a range including frigate "Eagle", the battleship "Goto Predistinatsiya" , sailboat "Comrade" and icebreaker "Arktika" and battleship "Potemkin". All the others are pretty recognisable to western eyes, having been available in various boxes over in the UK from time to time.

The Goto Predestinacia kit is actually closer to 1/96 scale and does represent an historic ship.  It does have flaws, as does every model kit ever made. Some say that the curvature of the bow is wrong; others point to simplific detailing and the use of dummy barrels instead of full cannon on the gundecks. But, with care, it does build into a nice model.
