Thanks for the info on the Lindberg Bounty.

There is one on ebay right now and I knew it wasn't the smaller ex-Pyro one.  It looks like a pretty nice kit, I took it for perhaps a Revell repop or something.  I'm not interested enough for 40 bucks plus shipping tho.

Interesting info on the Academy New Bedford Whaler repop of the Charles W Morgan.  I had one in my hands Saturday at Hobby Lobby - on sale even - but I was looking at a Pyro one on ebay and put it back.  Shoulda grabbed it I guess.

Just a quick note; the Pyro/Academy "Charles W. Morgan" (currently being sold as a "New Bedford Whaler" by Academy) appears to lend itself nicely to conversion into the USS Relief, a Humphrey's designed storeship launched in 1836. Scales out rather close to 1/220.

Haven't tried it yet, but tempting. Very tempting.

Where to begin...

Lindberg made a rather nice Bounty in around 1/140 in the 1960's; this is almost a smaller copy of the Revell kit. In fact, during that time period (1966, I believe) Lindberg tooled a number of kits that were literally smaller copies of Revell kits. They were -

HMS Victory

Bounty (should be "HMAV", but I digress...)

Flying Cloud

Santa Maria

The scales on the kits varied; for instance, I've read somewhere that their Victory was 1/384, an old model ship scale (32' = 1"). The Santa Maria was almost 1/144 on the nose.

Then things get confusing in the early 1980's. It was during this time period that LIndberg began releasing kits that were formerly Life-Like, which in turn were formerly Pyro. About this time, the older Lindberg kits mentioned above seem to have gone to Revell-Germany (except the Santa Maria, though I may be wrong). Revell-Germany than released the ex-Pyro Bomb Ketch as well.

Three ex-Pyro dies made it to Academy in Korea; some have said that these are actually copies. These were the Cutty Sark (1/350), Charles W. Morgan (1/200 or thereabouts) and the Bounty. Eventually, the Bounty would disappear from their line.

In 1991, possibly late 1990, Lindberg released a new Flying Cloud and Victory, the smaller Pyro/Life-Like kits.  Also released were the smaller Constitution and Golden Hind (I believe the Brig-of-War was as well), all Pyro dies.

In late 1991, Lindberg reissued their 1/144 Santa Maria as well as a mixed scale set of Columbus' ships; the Pyro dies again.

The current Lindberg line of ships is a mixture of both the Pyro and Lindberg dies, with a few Marx thrown in. Their current Bounty is the Pyro kit. As to the whereabouts of the older Lindberg dies, one can only speculate, though I suspect they are with Revell-Germany.

At least I hope.

Cheers,

Rob

Pyro, Lifelike & Lindberg - Which Kits ...
Posted by Tnonk on Monday, July 25, 2011 7:59 PM

Which of the following kits in each line were the same?

I am currently building the small scale Lindberg Bounty & I believe it is a repop of the ex-Pyro molds.

I just bought a Pyro Constellation on ebay and am watching a Lindberg Constellation which I believe is the same kit?

I am also currently watching a small scale Constitution in all three boxings - are all three the same or just the Pyro, Lifelike boxings?

I'm buying some of these small old kits to build for fun & practice, I'm having a blast playing with / putting together the Lindberg Bounty.

Speaking of the Lindberg Bounty - Did Lindberg produce two Bounty kits?  Their is a Lindberg Bounty on ebay now that is obviously a larger scale than the smaller kit - is it the same as the Revell?

Thanks for any insight on these.
