The Navigator
Revell made one a long time ago, it was supposed to be re-issued this year but wasn't for an unknown reason.

The molds were found to be damaged beyond repair.

Yeah that keel gave me fits because you couldn't push her around on the carpet in war games. Nice selection of airplanes though, and who can forget the "beware jet blast" decal on the island? Nostalgic anyways.

The Revell kit was in 1/542 scale.  However, there were a lot of problems with the entire range of Essex class kits, which included Essex, Hornet, Lexington, Wasp, Oriskany, Kearsarge, and Shangri La.  I hope I got them all.

Let me try to remember many of the problems ( I am doing this only from memory).  First, the same kit was released as each ship with no detail differences. Second, the hull had a sailing ship style keel with no bilge keels. Third, important details such as the five-inch guns and 40 mm AA guns were very plain and lacking not only in detail but in shape as well.  Again, the models contained the exact same armament fits although each ship differed significantly.  Fourth, the electronics fits were not complete.

Obviously, the modeler can work to provide the necessary detailing to get the ship he/she wants.  For example, there was an issue of FSM about ten years ago that had the Revell model of the USS Midway on the cover in which the builder grafted the lower hull from a USS Forrestal kit onto the Midway to more accurately reflect the Midway's fit.  I used that article as a guide to graft the lower hull of the Lindberg USS Yorktown onto the Revell USS Lexington in a conversion project converting the Lexington kit to USS Hancock (CVA 19).

Anyway, keep searching Ebay . . . the Lexington is frequently available cheap.

There is a very nice thread about the HORNET and it got me to thinking.Does anyone make the HORNET as she was in 1966? I mean like the MIDWAY she was very handsome ship with the Fully enclosed bow to flight deck area . And with the angled flight deck .I would like to find one in just about any REASONABLE scale . I mean nothing below1/400 scale . I would like to find two , so I could build the MIDWAY (the first ship I served on as a MARINE in the fleet) and the HORNET (I was a docent on her during her early years as a museum ship.) I do believe that besides the ESSEX that REVELL or TRUMPETER should do a generic post-KOREAN war MIDWAY class with at least the decals to do a basic MIDWAY in any one of the ships in the class . The HORNET(there were TWO !) was a very important part of N.A.S.A.s recovery program too ! So Why don,t we have a model ? And in 1/350 a modern HORNET would look great in a dio with a capsule recovery going on HMMM?              tankerbuilder
