Sea Witch: yay or nay

My first sailing ship was the Revell 1/96 USS Constitution (I bought it in 1966 for $9.99!)  I don't recall having any difficulties with her.  After that, I built the Cutty Sark, USS Kearsarge, and the CSS Alabama in the same scales before attempting my first wooden kit (Model Shipways Mayflower).  Several years ago, I saw photos of the Mamoli HMS Victory built by a 72 year old woman; it was not only her first sailing ship model, it was also her first plank-on-bulkhead model! It looked terrific!

My advice is to build the ship that interests you. You are more likely to finish her, and you will develop the necessary skills to do so.

You obviously weren,t a big shipbuilder back then.The "SEA WITCH" was and remained for a very long time the ONLY plastic clipper that had a square stern.Now , yes it was simpler than the CUTTY SARK and the others in REVELL,S stable , BUT , that made it a good step forward for experience .I would NEVER recommend any of REVELL,S sailing vessels to anyone who hadn,t built at least two wooden ones and maybe the YACHT AMERICA  . ( her rig is simpler .Then the " SEA WITCH"  and after that the sky is the limit . Good Luck 111       tankerbuilder          . I still have a "SEA WITCH ' It was given to me many years back by a friend who owned a hobby shop and I,d just gotten home for good from the MARINE CORPS , on my birthday !!!

Don't know about the Lindberg Sea Witch- never had one.  But the Revell Cutty Sark is a great kit- fits pretty well and has excellent detail.

I have the Lindburg version had it for years unbuilt sitting in my garage. Its way too big for me to build so. I will soon be Ebaying it. I never liked it I thought the level of detail was way short for such a big kit but then it is a Lindburg kit.

I did that model many years ago, one thing you will find is that you must drill out all the belaying pin racks (don't know if they changed that) the rig is simple and the scale is nice and big to squeeze detail in.  You should like it.

However, the detail on the hull is lacking, you may want to address that.

It is a decent model.  There is another thread going about this kit (Marx SEA WITCH) that shows pictures of the completed model.  Check it out.  This kit was originally released by Marx with a metal deck, then by Aurora, and finally by Lindberg.  Marx also released it as Sea Witch's near sister SWORDFISH (same kit, different figurehead).
