Looking for a ship kit (if it exists)
Posted by styrene on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 11:55 AM

Trying to find a kit of the USNS Comfort or Mercy (hospital ships).  If a kit doesn't exist, is there a kit of a similar vessel that could be easily converted without a lot of effort?

Revell has a kit of the Hope in 1/471 (?) scale, but it's not even close to being the same vessel type.

Thanks for all the help!

Unless I am mistaken, those are built on tanker hulls.  No kits are out that I know of.

Cascade Modelwerks makes(or made) a 1/700 kit of the tanker. You would have to scratchbuild from there.

Good Luck

Cascade, that was the name I was thinking of.  Thanks.

Cascade planned-to-make/made the mod to their supertanker set which would convert it to the Comfort/Mercy.    However Cascade went out of business soon after releasing their supertanker.  The hospital ship mod never went into distribution.  That was 12 to 15 years ago (damn, am I getting that old?)!

Your best bet for locating one would be to keep an eye on eBay or perhaps post a want on a more ship-centric board such as modelwarships or steelnavy.   Be prepared to pay a premium price for it, however.

Thanks for all the help.  Looks like it's time to go to plan B--whatever that is...

Heres a hint. Try this . I bought a model of the PYRO / LIFELIKE / LINDBERG  Version of the AMERICAN PRESIDENT LINER. I then checked things out very closely . If you don,t mind the size , you can do a conversion based on this ship .The bridge , stacks, and some of the upper deck structure is different. This ship is a good starting point though .        tankerbuilder
