I'm not a stamp guy, but - U.S Merchant Marine stamps!

I saw these at the Post Office yesterday and had to scoop up a few sheets (yes, I am one of those dinosaurs who still writes letters and mails checks). The U.S. Postal Service has just issued a new set of "forever" stamps, meaning they never expire, and this one is dedicated to the U.S. Merchant Marine.

The four stamps depict a clipper ship, auxiliary steamship, WW II Liberty ship (my favorite), and modern container ship. One one side of the sheet is a brief history of the modern U.S. Merchant Marine, in peace and war. About time these guys (and a few ladies) got their due, for all the sacrifices they have made. I've scanned a copy of the artwork, with the postage notation defaced to keep me out of trouble with Uncle Sam. Personally, I think these are great!:

I wonder if you aksed, if anyone in the general public would know what an auxiliary steamer was?  In this county (UK) it would be almost no one. Good to see the development of merchant marine being recorded publicly.

Now that I've had a chance to stare at the Liberty ship stamp a few times while putting it on envelopes, it strikes me that the artist engaged in a little ... artistic license, I guess, to maybe liven up the scene a bit. That Liberty is smoking - a lot! That was one thing that would be quick to bring a rebuke from the convoy commodore, if not a scathing personal shout out from the nearest escort, because black smoke could be seen by a U-boat from a longggg ways off, and this was in the days before satellite reconnaisance and all the other fancy stuff they have now.
