How much are you willing to pay?

How much you think an 1/800 scale ship is worth? the planes are pretty tiny. Ive never paid someone to do a model before so this is new to me too. I think something can be worked out.

This is a definite quandary isn,t it ? I will tell you what I used to charge years ago to give you an idea what the skillset costs to employ ,  Forty five years ago I got  $ 20.00 an inch for something like that , Authenticity NOT guaranteed ! TODAY , well it,s a moot point . I would be willing to do it for say $150.00 full price ,you pay shipping both ways . I would supply the proper paints and markings where necessary . I am familiar with ARII and I would suggest that you could definitely do it cheaper .The , Kits are simple and the little planes can be tackled slowly .Don,t expect to really detail them , after all it is 1/800 . I hope this helps you understand what you may be up against in hiring someone .       tankerbuilder    I would like to find another one of those if it has the angled deck . I served on the MIDWAY as a fleet MARINE !

Personally, I think the biggest potential obstacle is going to be shipping, if he can't find someone within driving distance willing to do it - the thing is going to be almost 2-feet long, allowing for padding, by a good 6-8 inches wide and high, so some kind of protective case would be almost mandatory. 

I am NOT trying to be a wet blanket for this project, which I think is a highly worthy one. But, having done something similar for a friend whose daughter was deployed on the Big E, the only way she could figure to get the finished product safely to Norfolk was to put it in her car and drive it there, which was about 400 miles. I think if you mail something like that you're just asking for disaster. The package size is too odd to fit in any standard box, and forget about marking it FRAGILE or DO NOT DROP/SHAKE/HANDLE ROUGHLY. Those words might as well be Kurdish to the average USPS, FedEx or UPS person.

MFSOB , I definitely agree .Something that size would be expensive and hard to ship .LUCKILY ,I use USPS for sending built units of masts and seperate radars in 1/96 scale from my home in TEXAS to BaD SHIPMODELS in ARIZONA .The average is one out of ten radars damaged and two out of four masts .So as you said it is a tricky proposition to ship something like that through any firm.      tankerbuilder      P.S. During my week long stay at my brother in laws parents house, his dad gave me a model ship he got back in 1985. Its an ARII 1/800 scale USS Midway. He served on it during his years in the navy. My problem is I dont build ships....

That's a non-issue.  If you build models, chances are you have the skills necessary to build that kit and do a nice job.  I say, try it.  I think you'll find you'll be able to do it and you will enjoy building something other than your usual building subjects.  And how much more special will the gift be, if you build it yourself and present it to your uncle, than if you pay someone.

I tend to agree with Brad, ww2psycho.  I haven't done a ship in decades, but tried one from Fujimi this past summer, and a few landing craft in resin, even.  They didn't turn out half bad.  Just take your time, and go with the instructions, test fit everything.

I too have to agree.  The ARII kit is a pretty basic "funscale" kit.  If you have  built other models, especially armor or aircraft, you won't have any problem with this kit.
