Photo-etched parts for Revell PT-109
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, March 10, 2003 7:42 AM
Hi!!!!!

I was wondering if anyone knows where i can photo-etched parts for the PT-109 model. I have come back to modelling after a long abscence. Even when i was into modelling, i pretty much built out of the box. Now I'm trying something new. I found a photo etch site for my NASCAR models, but i'm still at a loss for the 109 boat. How does one know if after-market parts are made for a certain model?? PLease, can some one help??

Thanks

I don't think anyone makes PE for that kit, but I sure wish someone would. It would really dress it up nice.

No one, yet, makes a set for this kit. Too bad, I love ships in this scale. If you know what your looking to enhance you might look for sets for 1/72 scale armour and sets for the 1/72 scale Snowberry corvette.

Get out your dremel and go to town on that classic. You'ld think as popular as that kit has been for the past 40 years that there would be at least 5-20 kits of it and a dozen updates. Sadly, no one has taken the ball and run with it.

I don't know finding about photo-etched parts, but HR Products at http://www.hrprod.com has white metal parts in 1/72 scale that you can look through. That's where I picked up the depth charges for the second 109 I did. Had to scratchbuild the racks, but they came out all right.

I had to scratch the few changes I've made to the kit, but you're right, why hasn't anybody done a super model or at least a pe of this kit

I think I've figured out the "insert Image" function, so I thought I'd use this picture of my second 109. It shows the HR Products depth charges. In case there are any PT boat fan(atic)s here, yes, I know there were no spray shields on the forward 50. It has been removed and an antenna has been added to the mount on the side of the cockpit.

Okay, the image didn't come out, but click on the link below and you can see what they look like.

Folks,

it might be of interest that there's a dedicated PE set by WEM (since around a year or so):

Typically WEM quality (which means top-notch).

Moreover, WEM sells a 37mm AT gun with PE parts, a 40mm gun with PE parts and a dedicated torpedo set (resin) with PE, all for the Revell PT.

These can turn the Revell kit into a winner!

Sir,

White Ensign Models has a PE set for this kit as well as several other accessory packets for it.  Go to www.ptboatworld.com to find out more about what's available.

WEM is top-notch on their PE sets for this kit. Also, they have colourcoat enamels of the correct colors for the PT Boats.
Also, like Garth said, check out PT Boat World for more info. There's also links to other sites of interest.

I'm having two scale modelers use a lot of the WEM PE sets and other accessories as well as their COLOURCOATS paints on two PT projects.  One is of PT-171 as she appeared in late 1944 and early 1945 and the other one is of PT-556, complete with a scratchbuilt quad-20mm Elco Thunderbolt mount.

Garth,

I haven't forgot our conversation.  I'm working on the 109 boat now in 1/72.  I'm taking notes to add to what I've already written as I'm moving along.  I hope to have some photos for you as well.  Be patient it may take a while.

Dave

PS.  Where did we find a three year old post?  :-)

Do you know if anybody makes a set for the 1/72 Tamiya JMSDF PT 15?
