Revell 1/350 Emden- what to add?
Posted by Irish3335 on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 10:45 AM

Ok, I just finished my 1/350 Konig and since I feel like continuing the torture, picked up an SMS Emden for the princely sum of $15 at a recent model show.  I looked at the kit, and it is suprisingly not bad (thought it would be toy-like the 1/720 Graf Zeppelin).  I would like to detail it up, who makes some upgraded guns/photo etch for it?  Anyone crack one out and have some pic's?  Love to see some finished models.  Thanks for your help

The Revell Emden/Dresden kits are among the best which they've done.  They are on my list of kits for a ship PE NOOB to gain experience.   Detailed enough to work on,  small enough that you're not stuck in a forever build proposition.

That is a great kit. I'm almost finished with mine, only the rigging left.

The hull construction in four pieces is a little fussy and is worth some care to make smooth. The reason for that is that Revell also sold the kit as the Dresden, the only survivor of the Battle of the Falkland Islands (for the Imperial German Navy), and she had four shafts.

The only aftermarket I bought was the GM PE set, which is a mandatory item. One of the blessings of the kit is that it was designed without railings at all except on the bridges. So theres little to no carving of railings to do.

In hindsight I would have looked at replacing the davits because they are kind of clunky, but it would be a little bit of a job.

The one part I was not happy with are the six 105mm guns that have shields. They look like little turrets, which they were not. It's a shame too because the kit also has two that are open mounts and look good, and two for the casements that are ok as well. But you need them. So I'm going to make six, but haven't gotten to it yet.

I'd say the wood deck is a maybe. Other than the boat deck, which is pretty much covered over, and the four gun positions, the rest of the ships deck is linoleum. Just a matter of $$. It's IMO a good kit to practice your deck painting skills on, because there is not much of it and it's mostly hard to see.

The PE was still in progress in these older pics.

One tip. Like all such ships, leave the stack caps off until the end. It makes rigging the stack stays so much easier to be able to fasten the stay to the deck, pass it into the stack through a hole and pull it tight out the top. Then glue and trim off inside the stack. There's a lot of them on this ship.

Good luck, she's a beauty.

Got to agree with Bondo. Great kit and GMM PE set is a must. It was the first ship model I ever did.

Yes, I got the deck color all wrong. Oh Well.

Thank you, and John yours is a gem, esp. the rigging.

Irish there's a book I bought on Amazon for $ 10 or so titled "The Last Cruise of the Emden". It's a historical record of her history through her sinking in 1914 and the subsequent journey of the crew back home. I highly recommend it and think you will enjoy it, if you haven't read it already.

Further reading includes the adventures of the German East Asia Squadron, in particular at the Battle of Coronel and the Battle of the Falkland Islands. For all the focus on Jutland, these battles to my mind are far more colorful and interesting.

I'll be painting my Scharnhorst in John's paint scheme.

One thing to watch out for is the fit of the main guns/turrets.  Make sure they will fit with the back piece closing properly. That was the only hangup in the kit and easily corrected by trial fit before gluing.

The PE set adds tremendously.  My Emden has won me quite a few medals, including at Manitowac.

My kit of that ship has been on display at KINGS hobbies in AUSTIN for about ten months now .I built it to experience something different from USN , DKM , And the ROYAL NAVY . I found it to be a neat klittle ship to build .There are parts , as mentioned that are somewhat fiddly .But , easy to fix .She looks good no matter how you do her . Mine is lightly weathered and done to reflect a long time at sea . I hope you enjoy it         tankerbuilder

picked up both sets online, just waiting for them to be sent!  Already started on the basic stuff, Im really suprised how detailed the ship is (not used to this kind of detail from Revell, much less in ship form).  Now I want to detail the guns on deck, any ideas?  They look pretty simple, and they will be a focal point on the deck.  Thanks for all the help, I am definately going to get the books from Amazon too!

I've got a bunch of photos of the shielded gun in the Museum and the open gun in the park, both in Sydney.

I think the open gun is a casement gun. The shielded gun has a kind of hinged vision plate in the front, the hinges themselves and a fair amount of bolt detail that the kit doesn't have. The open back and breech too of course. I haven't figured this out, but the plan is to use some turned brass 5" barrels I have, make up a fairly simple breech and pedestal, and fabricate the shields from brass sheet.

I agree. I built her in the pre-war scheme and it looks great.

Just as a heads-up, BMK makes a set of brass alloy barrels,  available through modellmarine.de:

They're also listed on White Ensign's flashy new website:

Ok, I have officially started my emden build - hate the 4 piece hull, more for me to fill and align.  I have all of the above suggested add ons, thank you for the advice - started to cut off the central deck for the wood deck to go on- top.  It was off by a bit, lots of sanding and dry fitting to get it to fit.  Pictures to come soon, thanks for all the posts with finished pics, the ships look great!

Any suggestions on the covered guns?  The kit ones are not even close.  Thanks again

i pick up and put down my emden because of the hull. still trying to get the seams smooth. i have the wood deck and the gmm pe. for the guns i will weither cut out the back and add some round styrene to simulate the breech or use the wem 1"/51 guns for arizona, cyt down the barrel and build the shields. may also cut out the 3 ib gun ports at the very bow and stern. working on a couple of ships (4 + 2 subs) now and t's interesting to see the improvement in my seam fixing and overall sense of colm when something goes wrong knowing i can fix it.

I loved building the SMS Emden but missed out on the Dresden.  I keep praying the RoG will re-release both!

I just discovered a spare set of GMM PE for the Emden. I guess I bought it as a spare when I built the kit several years ago.  Since the kit is finished and looks great, I will not be using this set.  I doubt if I will build another, since the first one came out so great, so I'm wondering if anyone is interested in this set.  I forgot I had it, since it has been three or four years since I finished mine, and the set was in the drawer with ship details, and out of sight.

Have to agree on the seams, they are the worst on the bottom where the hull halves come together with the add on halves - if the re-make it, a one piece hull would be great!  Anyway I figured out what to do about the deck guns with the shield - picked up a good old Mattel vacu-form machine, and I think I can make some convincing shields with that - ill post pictures once I have started

Good shot of the gun rear (thanks to all who posted some other great shots!)

s981.photobucket.com/.../jbc3335

here is my work thus far, still cleaning up a lot of soft detail. The wood deck is laid out over the original deck with all of the details cut out - you can see the center sections have been set in place, added photo etch doors and stairs to the center section.  If you look closely you can see that I replaced the bridge with more photo etch to cover up soft detail and ejection pin marks

s981.photobucket.com/.../jbc3335

close up of the bridge.  I replaced the wings on either side with sheet styrene and will open up the windows.   I also have the photo etch kit to dress it up more.  Just behind it is the 1/350 German WWII boat crew.  Super nice kit in resin, the figures are a little too parade formation for me though.  Hopefully kit manufacturers will release some more figures that aren't just flat cut outs.

s981.photobucket.com/.../jbc3335

Close up of center deck.  you can see where I opened the door on the top deck.  I will add some photo etch railing before I paint.  Also opened up the openings around the windows

s981.photobucket.com/.../jbc3335

here are the figures, like I said too inspection ready but the detail is great - we need more! (Hey Dragon, how about setting up some of those 1/350 smart kit figures for sale separately!)

Irish,

My S.M.S. Emden (finished it around a year ago) is not as polished as some others I've seen posted around but I enjoyed building it - I screwed up the hull on the first kit I bought and then, for insurance, I bought the double kit (Emden and Dresden) so that I'd have plenty of backup parts. I found that the GMM PE was mandatory to add more detail to a nice kit.

Here's the link:

I may end up building the Dresden some day - after about a dozen other ships in my stash.

Kind of cool that this kit gets resurrected.

She is one of the three or so pre-dreads that were kitted in 1/350.

Others are the Zvezda Borodino, and the Hasegawa Mikasa.

Here's mine. I did the repaint after the war was on.

You should buy this book, too.

After more than a year, I was able to finish my Dresden: Revell 1/350, deck Pontos, PE Eduard. Yes, is not perfect... I'm learning yet.

Well that looks fantastic!  Great weathering job, and the deck looks busy.  Nice job on the funnel rails. What did you use?  I'm in the middle of this kit and have pondered cutting off the molded rings and using some kind of PE rail or something.

  And again I say--She's a beaut!!

Thank you! I used two different Eduard PE kits for Emdem/ Dresden, and one of those comes with the funnel rails.
