HMS Victory IMAI Metal Kit
Posted by dogbone on Friday, October 28, 2011 8:50 AM

Hello out there in cyberworld.  I recently picked up in sealed condition, IMAI's metal HMS Victory kit, mostly out of curiosity.  It was sitting on the top shelf of mom and pop type hobby shop in Ebisu, Tokyo.  It cost a pretty penny (yen).  Most kits in Japan are not sealed with plastic, this one was.

I'm contemplating tearing off the plastic but first wanted to see if there are any comments (good or bad) out there from fellow shipbuilders about this kit?  The box isn't that long or tall nor wide.

I have several other IMAI sailing ships, to include a whole slew of 1/350 purchased while I was in Malta.

Cheers, Okole Maluna, Prost, Kampai

I've never heard of Imai producing a metal kit of the Victory.  I knew they put out the same 1/100 scale big plastic kit as Heller, only in an Imai box, which is a great kit!

There's an old discussion about it in this forum. You be the judge.

Imai did sell the Heller Victory, the really big one, in their own box for a while. It's a beautiful all plastic model at 1/100 and Imai made it far better with decipherable instructions, better cordage and IMO better plastic. I have one of those about half built.

I'd be really worried about anything that old being made from casting metal.

I remember looking at this kit many years ago in a Philadelphia hobby shop.  Frankly, it struck me at the time as one of the silliest ship model kits I'd ever seen.  I didn't buy it.

Caveat:  that was a long time ago, and my memory these days is notoriously unreliable.

My recollection is that the white metal hull halves were almost devoid of detail.  (No attempt to represent the planking, etc.  I don't remember about the copper sheathing.)  The plastic parts were better, but not up to Imai's usual standards.  The spars, as I recall, consisted of tapered wood dowels.  And the price was something hideous (I don't remember the exact figure, but I think it was over $100.)

Imai's best sailing ships are indeed among the best ever from any manufacturer.  But this time, in my opinion, the company went off on a bizarre tangent.  It's perhaps significant that neither Imai nor, to my knowledge, anybody else has ever issued another sailing ship kit like this.  I've often wondered if it was, in fact, a factor in the firm's unfortunately early demise.

That said, I feel obliged to repeat what I usually say when people ask my opinions on ship kits.  I don't suggest that my opinions are any more than opinions, or that people should refraid from building a particular kit because I don't like it.  This kit is one I personally would avoid;  I'd recommend either the old Revell kit or the Airfix one in preference.  But to each his/her own.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

WELCOME BACK , JOHN ! Believe me when I say you were missed . I had many if not most of IMAI,S larger sailing ships and they were great .This one I,ve never heard of . I even had two from the transition between sail and steam . Now the HELLER VICTORY is quite a pile of plastic and the whole line is to be commended .They are so good that you can convert to your heart,s content and you won,t have disasters . Ipersonally like the sail/steam types .YES , I am a stinkpot sailor (old saying from ,MARTHA,S VINEYARD sailing types !) So if it had paddlewheels , I would build it . Well again glad your back . tankerbuilder
