Need Help Finding Tiny Diameter Stainless Steel Wire Strands
Posted by Phillip1 on Sunday, November 20, 2011 5:41 PM

Fellow Modelers,

I have been looking (unsuccessfully) for very tiny diameter stainless steel wire strands to be used for rigging (i.e zeppelins and ships).  A fellow modeler gave me several strands years ago but I am now out and the friend who gave them to me is no longer alive.  The detailed description of what I used is below, but I have not been able to find where I can buy this stuff.  The only place it comes up on the Internet is at medical supply companies that sell in bulk (and probabaly just to doctors).

Manufacturer: Ethicon (surgical steel monofilament/ Size 5-0/ nonsterile/code DS-35)

Pack Size: Qty. 50 (18" strands)

Does anyone know where I can buy this material (or something vey similar used by ship modelers) for mast rigging.  The photo below shows how I used this material in rigging on a zeppelin model.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Might not have exactly by name by what you have posted above, but try SmallParts .  Check out the tubing section, all kinds of materials and sizes to choose from.

Inquired of Unc' Google and found

http://stores.nextag.com/store/4858217/product/1033842107/Miltex-Inc-9-40

and http://medrepexpress.com/store/sutures/cardiac.htm#surgicalsteel

(but these are needle-attached, and bulk boxes of smaller boxes; but, down to 6 7 7-0 sizes)

Try searching for "bulk suture"; also, check locally at medical products stores.

Stainless appears to have been the choice for abdominal surgery and bowel enastamosis, but, has been overtaken by nylon and other monofilament sutures.

Not sure what scale you are working with, but in many cases for smaller scale a problem is making the rigging less conspicuous to simulate smaller diameter.  On my Lindberg Graf Zeppelin I used the translucent monofilament thread, fairly available, and it looked great.

At larger scales, a medium grey nylon thread simulates wire cable quite well-  not monofilament, regular twisted thread.  While the SS wire rope is shiny off the spool, it soon weathers to a grey.

What about guitar strings? Already ready to go metal wires, you'd probably need just the higher strings though.

I suggest you check out model railroad stores.  There is a product called "E-Z Line" that comes in various diameters and colors, they use them for telephone pole wires, but they are stretchable and work well for aircraft antenna, and may be just right for what you want to do.  Ten bucks will get you a lifetime supply.....

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

You could get beading wire .It is stranded inside a vinyl coating .It is quite small. If you insist on wire ,I would check it out .  When you shave the vinyl off there are very fine wires inside .    tankerbuilder

"Ngineering"  makes a small .004 stainless steel wire. The part # is N2104-10.  They are 9 inches long and come in a package of 10. They were $3.65 US per pack on my last order from them. Their service is great also.

You might try your local fishing tackle shop. There are dozens of different types of braided monofiliment line in all different diameters. There is also a product called Steelon which is actual braided wire and comes in a variety of sizes.None are expensive and on spool could last years.
