Seeing the cramped interior of that thing just makes me appreciate how brave/commited the crew had to be.  God rest their souls.

i saw her last april and picked up a 1/24 cottage industries w/ complete interior at NATs. plan is to have her done for 2013 in colorado. imagine the poor guy who had to climb inside and clean the bodies of the earlier crews. they would have been bloated and would not have fit whole through the hatch.

The history of submarines designed and built at Mare Island California is worth a note.

Starting with the V-6, followed by the A series and then other hulls that included Gato's and Balao's, followed by the SS and SSN's of the Cold War.
