WATER , WATER everywhere or IS IT ?
Posted by tankerbuilder on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 8:41 PM

I have read many how to articles on making water for your ships at sea , anchored etc . Many talk about use this then go back and use that and so on .Also , everything is two part , so make your pour BUT don,t make bubbles .All this BEFORE it solidifies in the container .HMMM . I was perusing (reading ) my new MICRO-MARK  catalogue and came across something. How about this ,water in a bottle ?  No NOT for drinking .This is NO EVIAN !!  I am talking about a product for doing water for ponds and rivers on model railroad layouts . It is self leveling  AND slow setting (24 hour set-up time .It cleans up with water and soap . Now right  below it is another product for make churning water ,waterfalls etc (great for wakes ,hmmmmm?) That,s what it is for . Now one bottle of each is $22.99 for the first product and $ 16.99 for the second . You get a deal if you buy more then one bottle of each . Now it,s true MICRO-MARK ain,t the cheapest place to buy some stuff BUT , how much would all the two part product cost you and it doesn,t clean up with soap and water ? Well . I still don,t have the ability to post pics , but I bought some and experimented with this stuff and got a wonderful wavy (gently ) surface .I then took the second product to simulate Disturbed water i/e a mini-wake I guess . IT WORKS ! I would recommend this to newbies to do ship diorama building .     tankerbuilder

Looks interesting. Might see if the LHS can get some in for me (The missus would kill me if i bought it online, for some reason she cares less when i buy it from a local retailer)

That's interesting because so far my experiments with future and mod podge have failed.

Thanks for the info

That looks an awful lot like a Woodland Scenics product. Here's a review from someone who didn't use it, but said it was great! Clown On the other hand, here's a less than glowing review.

Woodland Scenics "Water". I have never used it, although I had an ocean front model railroad with about 30 lin. ft. of beach and it had a lot of water. Their Envirotex is a better product.

The problem is that they are meant to represent clear still ponds etc. And at our smaller scales, it just seems too still and flat.

Needs to be poured in repeated lifts. Lot's of them to get depth. They also attract dust like crazy. Tracy's critical link covers it, but the stuff does weird things. It shrinks quite a bit, and it also migrates up the model. If you've ever tried matte medium it's similar.

That waterfall was done with a skein of monofilament that was coated with the product. It won't do that on it's own anymore than milk from the carton will be ice cream.

I tried using some Woodland Scenics water for the beach base diorama for my A6M2N Rufe, thinking it'd make better ocean waves, but, as others have noted, you can'r really make waves with the stuff. I tried swirling a stick in it, blowing on it as it dried, etc., etc. and eventually went back to my old 1/700 ship standby, acrylic gel medium and careful painting. It ain't perfect, but I'll take it:

For whatever it might be worth, I have seen this item at my local Hobby Lobby in their train section!  If you're lucky enough to have a Hobby Lobby near you, or even a train shop, it might be worth a trip to see if they carry it.
