Glenco's Coast Guard Lifeboat
Posted by thunder1 on Friday, January 27, 2012 12:25 PM

In reply to a recent inquiry post regarding the paint scheme of Glencoe(ex ITC models) USCG 36' Motor Life Boat. I've built six versions of the actual boat representing it's 85 years of CG service.

They look great.  Glencoe models are usually not the best quality but they make a good starting point.  They do such interesting subjects.  These photos show what a good modeler can do starting with a not-so-good kit.  I have built a number of Glencoe kits- aircraft and spacecraft as well as ships.  Easier than scratchbuilding a subject, though still a lot of work to bring to the quality of Thunder1's models!

That is great work!

Does anybody know of a (say) European or UK vessel from c.1914-1940 that might be built from the Glencoe hull? Were there any fishing vessels or other inland craft that had similar hulls?

The RNLI had lifeboats similar to the USCG's lifeboat, the CG type "E" (blue hull) was based on the RNLI "Liverpoole" lifeboat. The Liverpoole boat was oar propelled as opposed to the American version which was gas engined powered (the sails and oars were auxillary power).

I would imagine a pilot boat or a fishing smack could be built using the Glencoe hull. I've seen some "O" guage rail road layouts using the 36' as a commercial fishing boat. As an example of a different configuration,  look at the picture with the gray hulled boat. It represents the "Arctic Cruiser" the Coast Guard used on the icebreaker "Eastwind" in WWII as a survey boat. The freeing ports in the lifeboats hull were deleted and its self righting ability was eliminated.  The "saddle" of the deck was more in line with a conventional cabin cruiser of the time. Post war the CG painted the boat white to match the icebreaker. These modified lifeboats served  aboard the icebreaker fleet when new 50 foot survey boats were put into service in the 1960's.
