Painting the USS Missouri
Posted by dbutl3r on Friday, February 10, 2012 9:39 AM

I am beginning to plan work on Tamiya's 1/350 Missouri in measure 22 camo. I am struggling with the following- actually finding the correct paints/ colors! I know that both White Ensign models and lifecolour make USN specific paints but the correct colors are often out of stock. Advice?

thanks

I ran into the same problem last year, but eventually things get restocked and you can get going again--although it does delay things and is frustrating.  I simply bought what I could, when I could, until I had everything I needed.  I also bought at least three tins of each color, to carry though the lean times.

It looks like everyone is out of 20-B Deck Blue (including WEM themselves), but here's a link where at least 5-N and 5-H are still available in the USA.

I'm painting my 1/350 USS New Jersey (1943: open bridge) in Measure 21 and have been using the Lifecolor deck blue and their Navy Blue 5-N.  One problem that I encountered is that of scale effect; the 5-N looked too dark with the Deck Blue.  My solution was to mix it equally with MM Intermediate Blue, which has given me satisfactory results with just the right amount of contrast.  I am very happy with the results.

I order my Lifecolor paints through Pacific Front Hobbies.  I have yet to wait more than a week for backorders on paint.  I know that WEM paints are excellent, but I prefer to use acrylics.  It's simply a personal choice.

If interested, I found a deck blue wooden deck for the Tamiya 1/350 Missouri by ArtwoxModels, set AW 10039.  The photo makes it appear too light, but, I ordered one anyway.  I'll let you all know after I get it.

Thanks Bill,

I was able to locate a store in California that sells the WEM tinlets. They should be on the way. Let me know about the deck though as it might be an option in the future
