Best color for Titanic red?
Posted by echolmberg on Thursday, February 16, 2012 1:08 PM

Hi everybody!

I'm working on Revell's R.M.S. Titanic which is actually my first ship model in about 27 years.  My daughters love the movie and asked me to build the kit for them.  I'll do anything to foster their interest in history.

The instructions call for "red" to be used below the waterline of the model but I know enough to know that you don't use your basic red.  Tamiya makes a "Hull Red" color but I've never been all that good at airbrushing Tamiya acrylics.

With that being said, is there a Model Master enamel that is close to the proper color I need?

Thank you!

See the Painting section at the Titanic Modeling & Research Association http://titanic-model.com/paint/

There you will find recommendations for all of Titanic's colors.  Their recommendation for her hull's antifouling includes Rustoleum Red Metal primer from the hardware store.

They also have several mixes for the elusive White Star Buff for the funnels

Ed,

Thanks for the info!  You even addressed the funnel question that I meant to ask but forgot.  It looks like I'll be stopping off at the hardware store on my way home today.

Thanks again!

I find Testors Model Master "British Crimson" makes a good "below-waterline" red for ocean going/salt water vessels.  A red oxide primer is good for fresh water vessels but a little low in saturation for the common coatings used on salties.

Thanks Don!

What's scary is that I actually do have a bottle of that color in my collection.  How or why I have it, I'll never know.  But it is in there!  I could just go that route and save myself a few bucks tonight.

Thanks again,  Toast

Eric
