New to ship building
Posted by Bill_K on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 8:34 AM

Hi folks,

I model in 1/48 aircraft but have decided to give ship building a try for a change of pace.  I bought the 1/350 Tamyia Bismarck several years ago and have decided now is the time to start building it.  However, I'm a little unclear as to what is available for upgrading the kit in terms of PE, etc.  I see WEM has a 1/350 super detail set available for the Bismarck, but it's for the Revell kit.  Would this work for the Tamyia kit?  I would like to do as much detailing as I can but I'm not sure what to PE set(s) to buy.  Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bill

Best use the "Search our Community" first, then ask a question. (1876 items items for "Bismarck".) Don't use the Forum "E-mail addresses" window for questions!!! Use "Search our Community" (a page down).

With regards to using the WEM "Revell" Bismark PE set on the Tamiya Bismarck, the best we can say is "Your mileage may vary." Many of the railings will be pre-measured for the Revell kit and probably won't fit perfectly on the Tamiya one. You can use generic railings or try and make it work; we haven't always had pre-fit railings in PE form. A lot of the details will probably work, but some won't.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their useful comments and suggestions.  TomZ2, thanks for pointing out the correct place to search for previous posts.  I was using the 'Search Finescale.com' and only came up with 9 items.  Even after you pointed out that there was a different place to enter a search (Search out Community), it took me awhile to find it amoung all the ads, etc.

I've to go with the White Ensign PE and have started ordering the three sets.  I'm not going to start on my Bismarck until fall, but in the mean time I'm getting together a plan of attack and references.  This is my first venture into ships and I can already see the PE and other details is going to take a lot longer than the 1/48 aircraft that I'm use to.

Thanks again everyone

Bill K - it IS going to take awhile, but look at the bright side, at least you're working in giant 1/350 scale instead of the little brother 1/700 scale *evil grin*
