UNDER the WATER--COLORS FOR HULLS
Posted by tankerbuilder on Sunday, March 18, 2012 5:58 PM

HEY,this is serious, stop all that laughing you waterline guys.We all strive to make sure our models look really good. One area where many fail is the color BELOW the boot stripe.A good fer-instance.The 1/700 COLOMBO EXPRESS . The color on this one should by all that,s proper be a faded reddish orange,on the redder side. Why? well the ship could sit at the pier and the paint would change color !

Now,with the scrubbing action on the sea it would get paler.Salt water, depending on wether in the ATLANTIC of PACIFIC is terribly abrasive! Now on BP/SHELL ships this color lent itself to match TESTORS-MODEL MASTER RUST !!ON WHITE STAR LINERS it was almost a nice medium BRITISH CRIMSON.. The ships of MATSON LINES and AMERICAN PRESIDENT ships tended toward an PRIMER(Bright) RED Color!.As you see , the various shipping companies used not just what they liked, but , also what was available in a geograpical areas.     TANKERbuilder

I've been very happy with various Floquil or Polly S box car colors.

Also, we should not forget that different navies and merchant marines paint their ships different colors below the waterline as well as above.  Not all ships are primer red.

Hi,BONDOMAN !

I have found that the U.P. boxcar red by FLOQUILis an excellent color for NEW ships .Modified with a little REEFER WHITE it is great for a waterline color representing at least a couple of years in service. Now,for the GREENS , there,s a kettle of worms!

Ther are at least seven greens that can be used with TESTORS-MODEL MASTER BERET GREEN topping the list for new paint.Another is FLOQUIL GREEN (I don,t remember the proper name ,but it is a medium green ,close to ZINC CHROMATE , but , with less yellow in it .)

Blue is not a color seen often on large ships, but,it is used by some lines."CHESSIE BLUE" is perfect. The other color in this set is a" MODIFIED SKY BLUE" That,s achieved by taking FLOQUIL,S "CHESSIE BLUE and cutting it with"U.P. LIGHT FIELD GREY".

FLOQUIL colors are great for this and I too have been using them for years.Another favorite is the FLOQUIL color known as "AGED BRICK". --------TANKERbuilder

Don,

I have never even considered British Crimson, but I went to my LHS today and bought a bottle to experiment with.  I used it on a Panda USS Arleigh Burke about half an hour ago.  I can't wait to see it when it dries, although it will probably need another coat. Thanks for the tip!
