Italeri 1/720 U.S. Aircraft Carriers
Posted by warshipguy on Monday, March 19, 2012 2:19 PM

Gentlemen,

My son-in-law asked me this weekend if I could build a collection of American super carriers in 1/720 scale. The only such kits are the Italeri ships coupled with the Revell CVN-65.  I know that there are issues with the Italeri ships, especially the Forrestal class ships, that will require correction.  I also know that GMM makes a nice PE detail set that will correct many of the problems.

Does anyone know of a decal set that will provide me with the outline numbers found on the forward part of the flight deck? The Italeri kit decals, and the decal sets I've found have solid white numbers.

Bill

P.S.  I know that I will have to convert the Italeri USS America (CV 66) into the JFK that will require major surgery on the port side, and will need to modify one of the Nimitz flight decks, as well as the island.  But, he is my son-in-law; and a former carrier sailor.

GMM also makes a decal set for the 1/720/1/700 scale Super Carriers as well which include all the outline numbers and ships names including the USS GHWB.

I know the Island of CVN-75 will need a SSSM radar platform that the GMM PE set does provide.

And the USS Ronald Regan kit is actually a new tool kit. And replace all the kit planes with Trumpeter 1/700 scale aircraft and the elevators that are in the down position need to have safety railing installed (I saw the safety railing in operation on the USS Abraham Lincoln 21 years ago).

Mike,

Thanks!  I also know that I will need to modify the Kitty Hawk kit's starboard side to build both Kitty Hawk and Constellation.  It seems I have quite a job ahead of me!

I have the Nimitz, John C. Stenis, Harry S. Truman and the USS Constellation and a whole buttload of 1/700 scale Trumpeter aircraft. Seeing as these Italeri kits are actually way cheaper than the 1/700 Trumpeter versions which are around $90 and the Italeri kits are usually just over $20. Though if I build the Nimitz in her 1980's configuration I'll need A-7's and F-4's as well as some Seaking Helo's.
