New ship kit delivery from Fedex!!!
Posted by stikpusher on Sunday, April 8, 2012 2:29 PM

Yesterday as I was about to leave for work I received a pleasant arrival for my 1/350 fleet. Academy's new HMS Warspite.

Squadron has this kit as a "flyer special" of 40% off and since my tax return came in late last month...Whistling So anyways after looking through the box last night examining the sprues it looks to me like Academy has another beautiful kit. I think they listened to criticism of the Graf Spee, which I built and thoroughly enjoyed, and improved on that kit. No plastic rails, if you want railings, you will have to get some PE, which will look nicer I am sure. But it does come with PE for the boat/seaplane cranes. Much better 20mm AA guns compared to those on the Graf- separately molded shields and very petite barrels. Hollow molded bores on the casemate guns, and blast bags for those and the main guns. All in all a beautiful looking kit in the box which I am very much looking forward to building. Way to go Academy! Yes And thanks to Squadron's sale, a 1/350 battleship for under $50.... life is goodCoolParadiseDrinks

BTW, the ship is supposed to be in 1943 fit. Does anyone here know what mods would be needed to backdate her to 1941 fit?

Very nice! I've been eyeing this kit myself...ended up diving at the Zvezda HMS Dreadnought instead since Great Models had one at 40% off...you going to do a WIP for the Warspite?

On the Bench: 1/32 Trumpeter P-47 | 1/32 Hasegawa Bf 109G | 1/144 Eduard MiG-21MF x2

On Deck:  1/350 HMS Dreadnought

Except in detail, I think the kit is accurate for 1941. The big refit was in 1937.

I've been considering this kit as well.

There's a fine volume on the Warspite in the Conway Maritime Press/Naval Institute Press series, "Anatomy of the Ship."  This particular volume is written by Ross Watton.  I checked it out of our library the other day because I'm thinking of turning my Trumpeter 1/700 Queen Elizabeth (on the way from Free Time Hobbies) into the Warspite as she looked at Jutland.  The book contains hundreds of superb drawings.  Studying them is a little tricky, because they show the ship in lots of different configurations - and it's occasionally diffiicult to figure out which is which.  But the necessary information is there.  The text also includes a section that details all the changes she underwent at each refit.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Doogs, once I get started on the build, yes there will be a WIP thread. That Dreadnought looks pretty nice too.

Bondo, from what I have found online so far, it looks like the biggest difference is in the light AA gun suite, and the way Academy molded that part it looks like they possibly had that option in mind. Many of the 20mm gun tubs are molded to be added separately which greatly simplifies the task of removing them . It even looks like a 1940 fit for Narvik could be done without much fuss. I just want to do mine as at Cape Matapan so when I build my Pola I will have ships from both sides of a battle.

TD, just looking at the kit in the box and based off my build of Academy's Graf Spee, I would say go for it. Its a nice kit of a beautiful historically significant successful warship.

J, I will keep my eyes open for that book. I have not been to our local library in years and this would be a good reason to search for a book there. I have found Osprey and Classic Warships books on this ship that are in my price range for reference material.

I am looking forward to diving in to mine. Gathering information at this point. I pulled out a couple other ship kits in my stash for comparison sizewise. Warspite is a just a little longer than the RN Pola and nearly identical in length to USS Arizona. Interesting. GeekedFrom as near as I can tell, Light Ghost Gray is a close match for Light Admiralty Grey, and Dark Sea Grey a good match for Dark Admiralty Grey. I am looking for a what color will work for the RN version of Anti Fouling Red now...Hmm
