What color was the deck of USS San Jacinto CVL-30?
Posted by davecww1 on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 9:44 PM

Hi I'm an aircraft modeler, and just finished building the Avenger flown by George W Bush off of the carrier USS San Jacinto in 1944. (I posted it in the aircraft section)  I purchased a 1/48 scale carrier deck from Verlinden and it is printed in a natural wood color. I can tell from photos that the deck on CVL-30 was a dark color, but lighter than the Sea blue of the Avengers.  Maybe a gray or medium blue? if anyone jhas information on the correct color and a link to a paint chip or colored photo of these decks I would love to see it.

Thanks

Welcome to water world!

THE best source, at least IMO, for ship colors in WW2 is the Snyder and Short website:

http://www.shipcamouflage.com/warship_camouflage.htm

Your answer is in there, but I'll let you find it so that you get the hang of the site.

For your particular search,l start by going to the "database" and look up CVL's.

There'll be a chart that tells you what "measure" she was in at various times. the first number is the measure, after the/ is the pattern.

But, in your case you are interested in the wood deck, and for that look at "special topics".

There's your answer.

Hint: buy their paint. it's the best color match.

Have fun!

ps: you meant George H. W., right?

thanks for the tip! So I need Deck blue 20-B.  OK I gueess it must have faded quickly since it looks a lot lighter than the Dark Sea blue on the Avenger.  Of course I meant H.W., it would not let me edit my original post.

Thanks

Also there seems to be a wear effect that lightened it, but not to the extent that lots of wood showed. And it's a rougher surface so looks a lot lighter.

I really like your model!
