these are called "blast bags" I use elmer's glue with a toothpick & build up a shape with several layers . Let the glue get a little solid but where you can sill spread it and put it around the barrel.the nice thing about this method is if you mess up you can remove it & start again & it won't harm the plastic. I used to use everything from tissue paper to putty until someone told me about this.Practice @ first & you will get the hang of it

I remember one time as a youngster trying the tissue paper/glue method...a very tragic event ensued involving sticky fingers, torn tissue paper, and my first utterance of a 4 letter explicitive. Simply too painful to dredge up now...*sniff* So this will be my first foray into sculpting...hurrah...btw, green stuff work well for this project or do you have a rec on a better product?

Thanks

Putty really is your best bet. An alternative is to use tissue paper soaked in white glue

Question about modelling protective covers

Here is a quickie

I am starting work on a tamiya 1/350 Fletcher DD. What is the best method for modeling the covers where the barrel meets the mantelet of the 5 inchers. I was thinking putty but if there is a better (easier) idea, I would love to hear about it. Thanks.
