HMS Victory - Del prado 1:98 Update 3

Nice work so far!  What is Del prado?

Nice looking work John, a lot of hours spent there, is it plank on frame like mine which is the 1/96 version by DeAgostini and if so, what did you use for plank bending?

Bill, Del Prado and DeAgostini are magazine collections, you get a magazine with the history of the period, the ship and other related ships and equipment etc. If it is like my 'Victory', you get an awful lot of wood planks and various brass, white metal and fabric parts to make the ship from plans every week. John has done months worth of work by the looks of it. Each plank of wood on the hull has to be tailored to fit against the previous one and to be bent to the shape of the hull. Not for the faint hearted but a hell of a lot of fun. Check out the Del Prado website or 'Build the Victory' website by De Agostini for a better idea. Expensive but I think worth it. Johns hull is probably over a metre long!

Thanks for the clarification. I have built several plank-on-bulkhead models over the years but have never heard of them. I will check them out.

Hi Bill, I have tried to find a website for you for Del Prado, no luck this side of the pond either I'm afraid, like you said, lots of sites but none leading to Victory (sic).

Hi Gents

I saw all your comments - The Del Prado victory was published around 2002/2003 and they have no access to spares or missing parts. My father in law gave his collection of around 80 issues last September. Various forums brought me the details of the missing issues and I have been able to upscale photo copy plans of the missing parts (luckliy they were all early issue which had large structural parts rather than any cast metal detail parts) and rebuild these in either mahogany or balsa.

The planking was a "first" for me - I used boiling water to soak the timbers (soaked for at least a week), re-steaming each plank just before pinning to the main hull ribs and hoping they would not split as many did which left me having to buy double what I actually needed. Later on through the kit I realised it was a double plank hull so I had to go through the whole process a 2nd time.

The Del Prado kit I am building is now way close to as good as the Deagostini kit - I would very much like ot build this some day too.

I have provided you some shots of my feable assembly process which involved at least 3 pots of wood filler and many hours of sanding down but at least she is starting to look like something nelson may one day have been proud to have sailed on...

Hi John, a lot of effort there, I had the same problem round the bow of my victory when you are trying to get a nice round bend and some of the planks dip inwards. What a pain! I am going to enjoy watching your build as I hope you will enjoy mine when I resume work on it.
