Tamiya 1/350 'BIG E' Enterprise CVN65
Posted by Jockster on Saturday, June 23, 2012 4:17 PM

Hi guys,

I'm gathering bits for my future build on my BIG E, I'm looking for decent photo reference books for it and I have been having trouble getting a replacement decal sheet from Tamiya as mine has been wrecked! Any suggestions for either?

A bit of history for my build, I bought my Big E on e-bay prebuilt. A bloke built it and told his dad to bin it when he left home but his dad, fair play to him, put it on e-bay instead. A nice enough job, but I intended going the detail route with this anyway. Great thing was that the lad used automotive paint to spray the hull and flight deck with the inevitable melting that ensued, AS it turns out, a very expensive mistake that catches a lot of novices out.

Not deterred, the lad went out and bought a second kit, so I had a Built and painted E with a complete set of sprues for everything else, all I had to do was strip it! I was going to wait a year or two collecting the extras I wanted and thought it would be nice to have the lads build sitting on a shelf gathering dust and inspiration but the gods decided to trash it in transit so I started early.

There is also the fact that looking at A.M.Jorges fantastic build has sent my impatience braincells into overload.

Stage 1. I have unbuilt the kit, every part has been removed leaving a painted hull and the three sections of the flight deck. Not a bad result so far considering it was put together with a tube of polystyrene cement and every thing is off except the two parts of the hull which will not come apart, no biggie as he has done a nice job of lining the bow up with the hull.

Stage 2. This will be the systematic clean-up of the two hull and three deck pieces, there are glue marks to be sanded down, new locating points to be drilled and the paint to be removed, when this is done, I will have a complete Tamiya Enterprise for 40.00 GBP. I have seen them advertised new in the UK for around 150.00 GBP so the saving will pay for the new Decals, Brasswork and Aircraft.

I have lots of pics to post already but as some of you may have seen on my Slava Class post, I can't quite get the hang of getting pics from my computer onto these forums. Please bear with me, it might just be worth it!

On opening the packages I have discovered that I haven't got everything I've ordered yet, but so far I have new White Ensign metal anchors, etched brass ship and airwing sets. Trumpeter A6 Intruders and Gallery Models Marine aircraft sets. Still, it's all very nice to look at while I'm sanding the Big Es bum!!

Still on order, GMM decals, Veteran Models phalanx, Toms Modelworks liferaft mounts and hosereels, Trumpeter tomcats/prowlers/seakings/hornets/seahawks/vikings/corsairs/greyhounds/hawkeyes and phantoms! I think I may have overdone it with the phantoms, anyone know when they last served on the Enterprise? I think I'm pretty set on building her from circa 1996.

Snap! It takes hours to download pics from my phone and I know it should take minutes and they never transfer! I'd rather use my time elsewhere!

With the fact that I have a complete set of new sprues and some salvaged parts from the junk pile, I am hoping to have all four elevators positionable! Does anyone know if there are any published plans for constructing the hangar deck?

The pics look great, Jockster!  I can see why Carriers are such popular model subjects...very impressive stuff!  Does it have some kind of rigging??  I've never built any kind of aircraft carrier or steel ships of any type, and I don't know much (or anything, really!) about those types of vessels....

Very little rigging David, you can see some remnants of the original stuff on the Island before the strip down. It is mostly aerial wiring and signal pennants. I will be posting pics of the 1/96 HMS VICTORY soon, now that will have a lot of rigging! Mainmast, topmast, t'gallants from bowsprit to mizzen all by hand! Got a lot of planking to do before that though!

Help, does anyone know where there are still sets of GMM Lo-Viz Air Wing East Coast decals? I've run out of places to look and everyone so far has run out of stock!

Okay, you have seen the pics of the stripped deck and hull, stage two is underway, paint removal, easy peasy, I use a product called 'Modelstrip' which comes in little white tubs with a blue lid. I last used my tub nearly 20 years ago and thought I would have to throw it out and buy a new one! No way Jose! I spread the paste all over the rear section of the flight deck to see if it was still 'active' and it is, I have a fresh new unpainted section of deck ready for repainting.

Best thing is that I scraped the paste onto the next deck section so no waste! Pics soon. I just seal it in a plastic bag for a day and voila!

How fast are they? I ordered my Air Wing Decals From Starfighter and my GMM elevators from  Hobby World Montreal last week and they dropped through the letterbox TODAY!!!!! I'm in the U.K.

Hull is stripped of paint too, Now for stage 3, Tidying up the glue marks and redrilling the locating pin holes on the Hull and Flight Deck of my Big E ready for rebuilding!

I think I want to go for a reasonably light weathering on her, she's a beautiful ship and needs very little make-up, but she'll look used, Bert Kinseys Detail and Scale has pictures of the flightdeck from above showing freshly painted deck markings that have had only a few hours of abuse but I also want her showing a few light touches of rust. You know what weathering is like though, you start light but you always end up a stage further than you intended.

Latest update gents is that I have finally sanded off the red paint from the hull, I don't know what paint was used but it was very hard wearing, I have now redrilled the rudder locations and the same with the propshaft support holes, the elevator guide holes and am about to drill out the port windows on the hull. The deck has been stripped, and I am repairing the locating points for aerials, reels, JBDs etc., and about to remove elevator number 1. Stay tuned for next weeks episode.

Just starting the first constitution work on the rebuild of this kit... The hangar deck! I intend rebuilding this model in four distinct "modules". Hull, hangar, deck and island! Because I will be fitting lighting I want to be able to take it apart from time to time to repair the electrics and occasionally rearrange the aircraft layout in the hangar! I do not intend to glue any of the airwing or ground equipment to the decks!
