Trumpeter 1/350 Slava Class Missile Cruise 'Varyag'
Posted by Jockster on Monday, June 25, 2012 4:07 AM

I wasn't going to start this for a while, but I couldn't resist. I got this kit because I kept seeing it when looking for reference material for the Zvezda 1/350 Protected Cruiser 'Varyag' circa 1900.

The Trumpeter box was packed with sprues including clear styrene for the superstructure parts that have windows, both full and waterline hull lowers, a small etched brass fret for radar screens and smaller antenna frames and a sprue from their aircraft range of a Kamov Ka27. Good instruction sheet (however they don't show the construction of the 'Top Plate' radar that the 'Varyag' uses, you have to work that out for yourself!) And a large colour plan. The painting instructions are almost non existent so research is essential.

Naturally I bought the etched brass set from White Ensign and I have started my build with that. I cleaned both WEMs and Trumpeters brasswork by 'wiping' the brass very carefully with some used 600 grit wet & dry dipped in white vinegar to get maximum key for the primer. then washed in water and mild detergent using a large soft paintbrush and drying the frets with a hot air paint stripper gun so that the brass was annealed before painting.

A few light passes with automotive grey primer and I'm ready to start the build. Next job was going to be masking the windows on the clear parts and the Kamov but I go on holiday today so that will wait till I get back. I can just see the look on my other halfs face when the brasswork and my folding tools come out of my suitcase in Greece! She has her books and I have my bits.

I'll start posting pictures when I learn how to do it.

I'm leavin' on a jet plane... altogether now, sing along with me, I'm leavin'......

Thank you gentlemen for your kind remarks, I have been folding and bending a few of the White Ensign parts that I took with me on holiday and I have been taking pictures as well to post, however, I am not very experienced with computers and I am struggling to get my images on screen, I have an inherent fear of picking up a virus on my computer so please bear with me for the time being. Willie and Joe, this is a nice kit so far on examination but as for fit and construction, only time will tell. I hope it goes together as good as it looks. Warshipguy, thanks mate and watch this space, I hope I don't dissapoint!

Jock.

P.s. It was the San Francisco photographs on the web that inspired me when I was researching the older Varyag.

It's a shame really, coz people will lose interest soon and it's a lovely kit!

I see the link you posted, Jock....if you want to post actual pics, I'll try to explain how I got it to work...hopefully it will make sense!  Like many things, it's difficult to be clear with just a *text-splanation*!:)

Okay, I see you have your Flickr account, and you have a pic on there.  First thing you want to do have one tab open on your computer for Flickr, and one open for FineScale....that way you can switch back and forth easily for posting multiple pics. Otherwise, it will just take a bit longer to load each page at a time.

View one of your pics on Flickr.  Above the pic, you'll see a little bar that has some icons for twitter, facebook, etc., and a button that says *share* with a drop-down arrow.  If you don't see this, click on the picture, it will then open it for viewing.

Click on the drop-down arrow next to *share*.

this will open a box in the pic, make sure you have the selection for *grab the HTML/BBCode*....and below that code, the HTML button should be selected. (it might already be set that way, or you might have to click on it).

In this box, you will see a few lines of characters, beginning with <A and ending with >A.

when you click anywhere within that box, it should highlight the entire group of characters.  If not, then hold the mouse button and get it all highlighted.

Right-click your mouse, and select *copy*

Now, you have the code ready for Finescale!

Switch over to the Finescale page, and get on the thread you want to post the pic to.

Your *reply dialog box* should have a button on the lower right that says *reply*...and to the left of that, some blue text that says *Use rich formatting*.  Click the *Use rich formatting* text.

This wil bring up a new Reply dialog box with a toolbar at the top of it, with different icons for the various actions you can take.

First, type in whatever you want to say about the upcoming pic, then hit *enter* NOT UPDATE OR REPLY, just use the *enter* or *return* key on your keyboard to get your cursor on the next line, so the code doesn't get mishmashed with what you previously typed.

Now, on the toolbar above your text box, find the little button on the top row that says *HTML*.

This will specify Edit HTML Source, and maybe open another dialog box!  NOW, you can finally right-click in this box and select PASTE to input your code for the pic.

Then hit the UPDATE or REPLY button or whatever at the bottom of the dialog box, and it should insert your pic in the correctly viewable format.

Hopefully this helps....and hopefully I haven't A) made it too confusing, or B) insulted anyone's intelligence by overstating the obvious....

Looking forward to seeing some more pics!!

David

I thought you guys might want to see the other 'Varyag' I'm building while waiting for piccies of the Slava Class. I got interested in this because of a memorial placed near my home in Scotland dedicated to the 1899 Cruiser that finally sunk off the Ayrshire coast in 1920. My brother was involved and gave me a limited edition bottle of 'Varyag' whisky. This got me researching and ultimately building the ship, this research in turn got me interested in the Slava Class Cruiser.

Would that be the Great Whisky Theft that is famous for keeping a whole Scottish town drunk for two years Jock? Heard something on the tv about it not so long back

Nah. different whisky, this was blended specially for the event, the one you are talking about was decades ago, I can't remember the details but I think they made a film about it. I can just imagine the locals looking at the whisky coming ashore and I hear in my head the seagulls from 'finding nemo'...mine? mine? mine?...
