Trumpeter had two classes each in 1/350 and 1/700. 1942 and 1944.

The original in each scale were the 1942 Guadalcanal versions, which had the 1.1 machine guns. After 1942 they (the few remaining) had 20mm's added.

These in my opinion are the finest US cruiser kits ever produced. Of a class that was the backbone of the heavy gun ships for at least a year after Pearl Harbor.

The 1.1 guns are ok and replacements are worth the cost.

The 5" guns are well done, replacements are a clear upgrade.

They are great models.

Bondo Master Models makes replacement barrels for the 1.1" quad guns so it would be probably worth it to upgrade the 1.1" guns than replacing them. And Model Master also makes some nice 3D 20mm guns which will be a nice replacement for the kit guns.

I built the 1/700 version for the Pearl Harbor group build, straight out of the box adding nothing.  I'm no expert ship builder, but looking at the build log will give you an idea of what's in the smaller scale kit.  I wasn't unhappy with the results.

Unfortunately, my daughter's cat knocked her off the fireplace shelf, and she ended up in pieces--something the Imperial Japanese Navy couldn't manage to do.
