Stash Size
Posted by renaissanceman on Friday, July 20, 2012 8:36 PM

I have read many times about everyone's model "stash" -kits they have in the closet or somewhere else stored in house, garage, etc. waiting to be built. I am curious just to see how many models some of you have in your stash. How many do some of you have total in your pile to be built? I have a feeling the numbers are up there.

Right now I have 12 large scale model sailing ships to build in my pile-most of them are 1/96 or 1/100 scale. I won't be adding anymore. It will take me probably 10 -12 years to build all of these. Currently, I am building the 1/96 Revell Cutty Sark.

My stash is very small compared to others, but this is the first time I've ever had a stash.  I'm up to 3 in the stash and 1 on my bench and 1 on my daughter's bench.  I used my birthday money to buy 4 models (1/48 P-40, P-51, and Avenger, and a 1/72 P-40) and I had a 1/48 Corsair that I started a couple of years ago.  I will probably finish these, or at least start the last one, before I buy any more.

-DJ

On the bench: 1/48 Avenger, 1/72 P40B
On daughter's bench: 1/72 ID4 Attacker
On wife's bench: 1/48 P40B
In the stash:  1/48 P-51D Mustang , 1/72 F4F-4 Wildcat, 1/48 Huey Hog

30-40. But I build in small scale, mostly 1/72 aircraft. Those are tiny boxes.

I don't like stashes because I'm 57 and they remind me of the lack of time I seem to suffer under.

Bondoman....I understand all too well.

I've got 47 in the stash now......Ive given away 10 or 12 in the past year.

The majority of what I have was small collections from e-bay and flea markets.

I recently got a deal at e-bay  that had the Heller Graf Spee,..Dragon ME 262 with PE,..Dragon 1/700 Bismark with WE's PE set and a sealed early version of revell/monogram PT 109 with PE and WE's 1/72 40mm bofor.

I got it all for 60 bucks...that was total including shipping.

Anyway...seems I have way more than I will ever get around to building......even if I just do them up OOB.

David,

Yes, 572.  I have built models for over 52 years and have acquired quite a few over the years. Some I'm just collecting out of nostalgia, some I'm planning on building for sale, some for a later date.  Others, I will sell. Who knows?

I've just gotten the stash under 1000. Mostly autos(799), but also motorcycles(81), airplanes(82) and ships(12).

Hopefully at the next NNL, I'll be able to sell some more.

No, just likely in that happy medium of finding things at good prices, and having the space to store those finds.

And, often, they are finds.

Go back and look at those photos.  Those original-issue MRC-Tamiya Bismark & Tirpitz boxes are nearly impossible to come by; but, were pretty reasonable buys "back in the day."

My stash is only about 4 dozen (I think, maybe--it's all in storage after my foreclosure).  It has some real gems that I did not part with on packing up--like IMAI 1/36 Cessnas; or the extremely hard to find "UDT Boat" with its equally rare Higgins LCPR; or the 1/32 ERTL/Italeri transport truck, which is most valuable for the excellent 20' CONEX container within.  Oh, and a few ships--Spru's; Tico's; frigates, DDs, and a CA or two.  Oh, and an an original-boxed Sparrowhawk, and Matchbox Dauntless, both in 1/32.

I wonder what percentage of injection moulded kits manufactured ever get built?  I am guessing 15%.

I'm afraid to count!

Surfsup, you're going to like that Schnellboot.  It's a fun kit.  It was like the third kit I did after coming back to the hobby, before I knew about all this PE stuff.  :-)

I have about 10-15 kits.

I don't buy a lot mostly because I don't build very quickly.

I don't have an accurate count on my stash, but it is about 300 kits, or possibly more. Recently, I disposed of two dozen kits as a donation to our troops.

I have about 200 plus, a mixture of aircraft, armor, figures and some 12 ships, 3 of them the Revell 1/72 U-boats. Now that the wife wants to move back to Tucson within the year, I will probably sell off a good portion of the stash so not to lug them across the country again. I hate moving!!

The number of kits in a stash is always a moving target.   Right now I've got 597 ships (281 built) in mostly 1/700 and 1/350.   The current 1/35 armor group is 362 with 193 built.  As time goes on I have changed focus and have gone through numerous purges of both unbuilt and built kits.   Selling built ship kits is tough as they are a bear to get to your buyer without some form of damage.   Armor is pretty easy.

As for the number crunchers out there 47% of my ship kits are built and 53% of the armor kits are built.

Just finished the 1/700 Fujimi Amagi and am about to start the 1/350 Trumpeter Saratoga.  I don't know how many of you have the Amagi in your stash but it is a bit of a disappointment.  There were a good number of fit issues and the really long hull of my kit was badly hogged.   WS

25-30 aircraft, armor, ships, and sci-fi. That's enough to keep me busy for a few years.
