more then likely died of hypothermia due to the water temperature being it was april.

There is a sad part not reported, 3 saliors were later found one in a raft 2 in the water. The had escaped from the front torpedo room after the sub was scuttled and died most likely on the way up except the man in the raft

Just read in the news that U 550 was discovered off the coast of New York. I did a little digging and it was a Type IXC/40 launched in 1943. It's Commander was Kptlt. Klaus Hanert. She was attacked by three USN DE's and sunk on 16 April 1944. This was her first mission. It must have been one hell of a fight, 44 dead and 12 survivors.
