Cheeks

Okay.  I'm a clipper ship.  Built in 1846 in New York City.  I'm called the Sea Witch.  My crosstrees are wooden.  My masts have lots of iron hardware.  Do I have iron cheeks?  Charles Davis does not say.

Since most of the masthead was painted, including the cheeks, I would think in model form it wouldn't make much difference the material, since painted wood and painted metal look so much alike unless you are modeling in a very large scale.  My impression though is that in most cases the cheeks were wood.

I'd think iron checks would have a somewhat different shape.  If they have the classic s-curved shape I'd think wood.

No, by any means they were not iron. Creeks were bolted to the mast wood to wood face.
