WW1 ship antennas
Posted by Don Stauffer on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 8:29 AM

While some graphics seem to show alternates (radio was changed several times, apparently) the most definitive drawings of the Dreadnought show a "barrel" shaped antenna, where there was a central conductor surrounded by eight other conductors, held in position by a group of snowflake-shaped structures.  I assume this cylindrical array increased the bandwidth allowing some choice of frequencies.  Anyone know what they actually called that style antenna?

The Pontos detail set does provide those separator/supports, and I have built a jig to try and make the four arrays needed.  First attempt doesn't look good- made with monofilament.  Second try using regular twisted fiber (multistrand) thread looks much better.  Will have to rescue the insulators from the first attempt- there are not enough spares for a whole extra array.  The Pontos set gives no instructions or drawings of the antenna, but support folks have given me from forums gives me a good idea of what the size and arrangement of the array is- now I only have to make them!
