What color Gun Doors on USS Constitution??
Posted by Captain Isaac Hull on Monday, October 8, 2012 10:24 AM

I know that, at times, there were NO doors on the hull of Constitution for the guns below deck.

There are now. They are painted white.

BUT...

What colors were they.... from commission... to around 1816?

Did the side stripe ever appear checkerboard when the doors were closed?

They are black on your model...

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

The restored ship does show white outer surfaces... Commander Martin I think gives similar guidance.

The Hull model at the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM), however, shows BLACK outer surfaces on the few lids that are shown on the forward gun ports:

Uh?

Occasional factual, grammatical, or spelling variations are inherent to this thesis and should not be considered as defects, as they enhance the individuality and character of this document.

Thank you, all.
I will make the outside of the doors black.
I do like the Nelson checker... Even though on my model the doors are open and you don't get the full effect...
But they will be black. Which will help cover the unfortunate amount of glue/damage present. The doors have had a tendency to break off often. And I cant justify leaving them off because the hinge holes are a bit glaring.
Thanks again.
I'm nearly finished and will post a "launch video" soon at this model's/Isaac Hull's facebook page
https://www.facebook.com/isaac.hull.58
Which contains lots of content, messages from Isaac Hull and a build log.
