If you are looking for just a smooth finish for paint, you can use a clear acrylic (like future) clear coat, and then bondo/body putty..  And lots of elbow-grease, naturally.

I want to remember that Dragen is an International Racing Class, so the sizes and specifications are published, so that the size and dimension of the mast, boom, etc. is all called out somewhere.  Also means you probably can find what material the hulls were made of, too (which could be diagonal planking, plywood, steel, or even aluminum--so wood grain or straked planking might not be at all to scale).

I'd for sure send a message to Billings (if they are still about) to see if they still have the plans available.

That mast is probably a rounded rectangle or oblated ellipse of some sort; I'd bet money it's tapered fore-and-aft, and likely athwartships too (this was, and is, much in fashion in racing rigs, where lean is mean).

When you start planning out the rigging on the mast, keep a strong idea on having it be removable, as that mast is likely to be 2 to 3 times the length of the hull you have (or 6" taller than any vehicle available to transport the finished work in--[expletive] Murphy).

Borg-

I'm hoping you will begin a *work in progress* thread for this build...I'm still relatively new to shipmodeling, and I've recently been looking into wooden kits....I think it would be great to see your progress, and maybe I could learn a few things during your project, as well!  Plus, there are many skilled and knowledgeable modelers here, who I'm sure would be very happy to offer advice...

I think it's a really cool idea to finish it for your grandfather!

Good Luck!

Dave

Thanks for the info Don!

Today I checked out the whole contence of the kit. I think I miss two crucial but replaceable parts, the mast, and veneer for the deck planking.

Also, I thought it was a Draken (Swedish for Dragon) but it is a Dragen (Danish for Dragon). It is not a Viking ship but a 1920's competition boat.

For wood putty, they have new very fine grained "plastic" stuff (not plastic wood, though) that I think is acrylic, at hardware stores. It is stainable.

For glue, white glue is an old standby, but I also use gel CA. I use that to "tack" joints until I have everything in place for white glue.  If you are trying to "wick" white glue into joints already tacked, you can thin the glue 1:1 with water- it wicks better then.

For paint, for that ship you'd need a combination- stains for most  of hull and spars, decks and enamels for decoration, like shields and maybe dragon figurehead detailing.

Billing Boats Draken: First time ship (and wood) build

Hy guys,

Today I was visiting my grandfather and he gave me a 25+ years old Billing Boats Draken (Dragon). It is an old project of him but he has lost interest in finishing it.
So here is my plan, in febuary my grandfather will turn 85. And I would like to give him the Drakne as a present.
The good news for me is that all parts seem to be there. And the hull is almost finished, all the planking is in place. The bad news is that I have never build a ship model or a wood model...

So, I am hoping you guys have some basic info for me on building these kind of models.
Here are my questions:

1) I need to putty the planking to make a smooth hull. What kind putty is used with wood?

2) And what kind of glue?

3) Paint?

4) Where could I find refences for these kind of boats?
