Wooden decks
Posted by constructor on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 5:24 PM

I went surfing to find reactions to the new sensation. The wooden decks. It seems that  the users are having a hard time applying the very thin decks. Some were complaining of not very good adhesion. Some were saying that it is easy to crumple the material. What does the manufacturers have to say about this. Is there a proper way to apply them?

On my recent Dreadnought build I learned a lot.  It had two decks.  On the first I punched out the deck from the surround, and punched out all the "cutouts" for deck fittings.  THEN I tried to remove the paper covering the adhesive.  Mistake.  I did break the deck in several places.  On the forecastle deck I removed backing first, then carefully punched out holes, and removed side waste material- worked much easier.

My previous experience with wood deck was the Encore Olympia.  That was a bit thicker wood stock, and had no trouble.  I have also heard of problems getting adhesive to hold well.  On Olympia I did have a few ares that came up- small areas, and putting a little CA underneath solved that.  Had no problems with adhesive on Pontos set with the Dreadnought.  That adhesive is much stronger. But I had to be careful positioning it- once it was down it STAYED down!

Frankly, I am 0 for 2 on these.

First set for the 1/350 Arizona haven't been installed yet, but the extensive mods to the model render the deck useless.

Second set for the Bronco Ting Yuen are un-adhering and buckling so much that I have to pick my photo angles.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

If you happen to decide not to use that Arizona deck..... :D

Actually, I have an inquiry in to Free Time Hobbies, they had some of the ArtWox sets due in but none showing yet. If you decide you don't need yours shoot me a note.

I have used decks for five ships now in both 350 and 700 scale.  I have had very little problem with them not sticking in places.   The problems I have had have been cured by a bit of superglue.   Preparation of the deck is crucial to good sticking.   A good cleaning is a must.  Enamel paint that has properly cured underneath is OK but not acrylic.   I have found that it is best to paint the raised details first in enamel, let it cure completely and then apply the deck.   Also, too much handling can cause the deck to lose adhesion and when that happens just use a bit of superglue will fix it.   WS

Ive had no dramas using KA Models wooden Deck kit for Tamiyas 1:350 Bismarck. Sticks realllly well. you just gotta make sure you line it up best as you can before pressing it down, as it will stick straight away. Its just a bit fiddly to apply around some details but looks great =)
