Gato at sea, question about davits
Posted by blusteel on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 7:54 PM

.....when they were at sea on combat patrol, were the davits in place? Ive seen some pics where there appear to be no davits on the deck.  Thanks for your input.

What davits are you referring to?

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

I'm not sure what davits you're referring to either, but I'm going to say I'm 99% sure they were stowed. Considering that the railings were, it makes sense. Less drag and noise.

I'll look through my Mare Island books tonight. The ones on the Revell kit are torpedo loading cranes. See how they are just above the hatches. It's function was to set up the gear and position the torpedo down the slide using rope falls.. It certainly wasn't capable of picking up a torpedo.

I recall seeing pictures of them stowed flat on deck, and also missing. I'll try to find a picture of one sailing with them erected, but I doubt they were.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.
