I am about to start the Airfix Suffolk.  I have no answers, but I'm thinking about brush painting.

Thin coats with a good ol' bristle brush will look just fine.

I agree. That's a complicated project. Remember to paint from light to dark.

Masking ships works pretty well if you use lots of really little pieces of tape, say 1/2" x 1/4".

Just keep putting them down until you have an edge, one area at a time.

One basic rule of ship models is that they take a long time because the scales are small and there are a lot of really little parts.

That's a classic kit, and the real thing still exists, you probably know.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

You can freehand brush paint but it takes practice and diligence. I prefer to mask with tape and airbrush, but one can mask and brush as well. I wrote a bit about my take here.

Has anybody tried liquid masking, as is done in watercolor painting?

I know people who like it, but I found it messy and hard to control. I could see liquid masking inside a thin tape outline, but otherwise I'm happy with tape.

That said, some people will use silly putty for masking of less straight shapes, such as the US Measure 12 Modified.

If the camo scheme is straight edged,I'll use Tamiya tape (great stuff, btw). If not I free hand it.
