COLLECTIBLES -OR ARE THEY ??
Posted by tankerbuilder on Friday, November 16, 2012 10:20 AM

I do go to model train shows to see what hardware in H.O. or N. scale I can find for my ships. Recently I,ve been seeing model tugs (the old PYRO and LINDBERG ) kits. They are BAGGED not BOXED and sold at the price of $30.00 to $40.00 apiece.

Now , I know they are still available at many stores so what gives? I have mentioned this to the seller only to be ignored.Who then WILL or CAN tell me how and about what age a kit becomes collectable. These sell in stores for about $5.00 to $7.00 a set (two boats to the set.)Sometimes more of course.

I don,t agree that anything I can readily buy at HOBBYTOWN or HOBBY-LOBBY should be considered a collectible. If it,s still sold and not in super limited supply,in my mind it doesn,t rate that status. Am I wrong ? Hey,TRACY ring in on this will you . I want to know if I am wrong in thinking this way.  TANKER-builder

My understanding for those older kits that are still being manufactured, such as the Revell USS Missouri (1/585), it is the boxes that make them collectible. It isn't the kit itself.  If the basic model is still manufactured, releases of that kit as other ships are collectible, for example, the Revell USS Arizona used to be sold as the USS Pennsylvania, the Missouri as the other ships of the Iowa class, etc.

And as I have seen at many shows.....these guys tote them back and forth to shows for YEARS!

Many of these sellers THINK they have gold....

I have often bought so-called collectibles from model fairs just to open the sealed boxes and bags in front of the seller just to see the look of horror on their faces!! Jockster!

On the bench-1/350 Zvezda Varyag, Trumpeter Slava class Varyag and Tamiya CVN65 Enterprise. 1/400 Academy Titanic and 1/96 DeAgostini Victory.

As with any thing else, the value of an object is limited by whatever an individual is willing to pay.
