Trumpeters 1/200 scale Bismark
Posted by John Lyle on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 8:45 AM

I have been looking at pictures of the kit and it looks great with all the photo etched parts. However I have one big question whey are there no ship railings included in the photoetched parts??? That is a serious over sight on the part of Trumpeter. Does anyone know if there are 1/200 scale railings out there for this kit?

As an aside a hull that size just screams to be converted to R/C.

Cheers

John

Easy answer and it is no "oversight".  The cost of adding all the photo etch rails to a ship model that size would bump the cost of the kit at least $50.00 to $75.00.  The kit is already at a premium price, plus many builders choose not to use the photo etch for various reasons.  1/200 scale stanchions and rails can already be bought from cottage industries.   It was strictly a marketing decision I assure you.

Actually there are four small frets of photo etch included with the kit. They are very basic though. I do wish the would have made the railings for the swinging platforms that mount to the forward superstructure and the curved ones for the range finders that did not have domes.

If I ever spent the money and time on that size of a kit, there would be no way it ever went anywhere near a body of water

Funny you say that. I was at an airshow a couple of years ago, when an RC helicopter "flew into terrain".

"Well, there goes $ 5,000" said the guy next to me.

If I ever spent the money and time on that size of a kit, there would be no way it would spend time in a glass case on a mantle shelf. I would motorize the bugger and R/C it!Big Smile
