Well, this is my first attempt at building a ship. For the three years of modelling I have done, it's been mostly armor with a few aircraft here and there. I decided to mix it up again and try out a ship. I picked this particular vessel because my girlfriends father served on it for four years in the late 60's, early 70's and I think he will really appreciate it. So as I go along, if anyone has any pointers, do let me know.
So first I disregarded what the instructions told me and assembled the hull first. My plan to to start with the hull and assemble the main superstructures on the ship as well as any details that won't get in the way when I mask the deck for painting the bulkheads. Currently, I have the two halves of the hull together which left a nasty seam line, so using CA glue I've filled them in and sanded smooth. I did start out with Squadron Putty but didn't like how it applied and was rather difficult to work with.

Did the kit come with any photo etched parts? If so, could you post a pic?

I believe it does as my USS Virginia has PE in it.

Yes, it comes with some PE, I also bought some railing from Tom's Modelworks.
I've now finished all of the main superstructures and will start to put on the railing around the open areas.
So I've started putting on the PE railing, this is the first time working with PE so small and frail, it's going better than I thought.
Coming along nicely! We've tried to get Dragon to change their instructions order but have made little headway....
