U-581 Decal color help please...
Posted by Hokey on Monday, December 17, 2012 1:39 PM

I'm just about done with the Modelcraft U-581 kit.

Question 1 - Box photo indicates red lower hull. How can I be sure that's correct?

Question 2 - No decals came in the kit!!!! So I need to make a U-581 decal set and a small :ladybug" creature. Can someone help guide me with that?

No wartime color photos have ever shown U-boats to have a red lower hull. The most common color was Dark Gray RAL-7021, which had been treated with anti fouling chemicals to inhibit marine growth.

I can not offer any help with the ladybug thing except to suggest trying standard red and black colors for that and hand paint it yourself. Perhaps try using a sharpened toothpick for more precision.

F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!

U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!

N is for NO SURVIVORS...

Thanks! That's what I thought. I had never read anything about red hulls but figured I better ask.

I'm sure I can paint the bug but - how can I make the U 581 decal?

EDIT: I found a jpg of the bug on the net. Blue circle, black bug. Wondering if that can be "printed" to decal material?
