Input on model choices?

Well, I did it again....

Bought another kit on eBay....it's the ERTL Pirate Ship, but from what I understand, it's from the same molds as the Imai Spanish Galleon....and I got it for a much better deal than the *Galleon*....Looks like I'll have my Trifecta of ERTL/Imai wish-list kits...Whoop-Whoop!

So, now I'm REALLY done buying kits!  For awhile, anyway!

I know, Bill....I've been looking for that kit for some time, it totally fits my preferred style...in fact, of all the ship kits called "Spanish Galleon", it is the only one that I really, really want!

Unfortunately, I can't buy this one...not for 90 bucks, not right now....I just spent my *fun budget* on these other kits......it's a shame, too....it looks to be in perfect shape!

Hopefully another one will come up, either for a better price, or a little bit later down the road, so I can justify buying it!

My family doesn't seem to grasp the concept of a *stash*....they think I'm developing a compulsion to buy model kits for storage....I tried to explain that when I see a good deal on a kit that's no longer available on the retail market, I have to buy it and save it for later!!!  I may not get another chance!

I do want that Galleon...

The Imai Spanish Galleon is an OUTSTANDING kit!   If you can swing it, get it. You will not be disappointed.

Yeah, man...that's a good point!  I can hear a few loose pieces in the Chebec box..don't want to lose anything.  I'm still very stoked that I got the kits for such a deal...35 bucks each.

I'm sure I'll break them open soon enough and take a gander at the contents...I'm a little concerned with the box integrity...the tops are kinda floppy, and I know once the plastic wrap comes off the boxes will be flimsy....maybe I can tape them closed again...

Now the real question is: In what order should I build them?  haha

I'm also to a point where there aren't  many more kits I'm interested in....still looking for an Imai/Ertl/Aoshima Spanish Galleon....there's one on eBay now, but it's 75 bucks plus shipping....aside from that, I guess there's a couple of Zvezda kits I'd probably like to work on....

Anyway...

What a mess, Jake!  Is it wrong for a person to see a ruined workshop, covered with the debris of a destructive natural force that damaged the lives of so many people, and I'm still concerned about the stack of mutilated model boxes under the bench?!?

That was a sweet haul!  Since you're going to build them anyway, I would open them and catalogue all the parts to see what is broken or warped.  Also, I put all the parts that have come off the sprue in a zip lock Baggie so they do not grow legs and disappear.  

Something I found out the hard way is not to open the boxes too much to dry fit and think about how you are going to build them.  I broke a couple of pieces and lost some that way.

Anyway, congrats on your find!

BTW I have the older and BETTER rigging insructions for the Cutty Sark you may want. They have a LOT of detail more-so than the newer ones.  Drop me a PM with your address and I'll shoot you off a set.

Dave, This what the shop looked like AFTER the water went down. The wet stuff is the mus that was still wet a month after the storm.

Congrats on the find..I  Ebay'd my recent purchase of the 1960 Revell CS  in the older original box...parts still in their sealed bags...but..if you are going to actually build them and not resale them..bust them open and inspect.  It's Christmas again.

Sweet!  Got all three for 100 bucks! Thank You, Craigslist!

The big Constitution, the big Cutty Sark, and the 1/80 Minicraft Chebec....all new in shrinkwrap!  The Revell boxes are a little dinged up, but I suppose that's to be expected for kits that were purchased many years ago.

Now I have another question: How many people out there like to open their *stash* kits and look over the contents, and how many feel it's important to keep the plastic wrap on, so they're in brand-new shape?

I find myself wanting to open the boxes and examine the parts!!

Jake- Sorry for your losses....what a shame to lose such beautiful pieces in the hurricane!  They look awesome, though!  Thanks for the pics, and the hull painting tips...that Wilkins book has some good info!

I haven't got the kits in hand yet, but I'm hopeful the deal will go through without any problem...I'm supposed to meet the guy tomorrow....I'll let you all know how it works out!

Nice...thanks for the tip.  I tend to use lots of alcohol and inks for my weathering(from my train days)

I used a thinned green ink and then applied air downward to make the ink run in the direction I want..it then dried fast as the alcohol evaporates.  I appreciate your tip.....I'll try it as well.

Here is how I do it.  Go this tip from the old Les Wilkins' book "How to Build Plastic Ship models".

The lower hull painting /Corrosion detail was done in the follow manner: You must use FLOQUIL Brand Paints for this step.

1. Coat the hull with Floquil Copper (ONLY this brand of paint will work), let dry 24 hours.

2. Using a #2 size brush, use Floquil Lt. Green, streak the hull in from the top of the plates to the keel in downwards strokes only.

3. Using a #2 size brush, paint Floquil Ant. White directly over the Lt. Green, and then while the paint is still damp wash/wipe over the damp paint with a soft rag (I use an piece of t-shirt) You can only use turpentine, any other solvent is too strong. Let dry over night, the smell is not that bad, but if you work indoors on your models you will want to do this outside and let dry there

The smaller chebec was destroyed by Katrina, the big Cutty sark was the ONLY model out of 15 or so that survived - it was in a case in my office.  The Connie, it being delivered to Hot Springs in the spring.

I’ve build all three. The Cutty Sark I’ve built for 4 clients now, just finished the Constitution and have built both of the Chebec’s.  Sadly lost the smaller one to Katrina and ALMOST lost the bigger one. I have build albums on all Email me off BB and I can send you some pictures. I’m going to upload a few on facebook and link them to the next posting.

Hmmm...I didn't even know Heller still made models?  I haven't built any of their ships, but they all seem to be impressive!  Even the much-debated Soleil Royal holds a lot of intrigue for me....if I could only justify the 200.00 price tag, I may build it one day!

I've re-negotiated the deal to include the Cutty Sark, too....just can't pass it up!

That is terrific news about the Heller Chebec!  Now, if they would only resume their planning for a 1/100 Royal Sovereign (Sovereign of the Seas!)

I agree about the Revell Cutty Sark . . . it is a terrific kit!  But, stay away from their Thermopylae; it is only a slightly altered Cutty Sark.

Oh get the CS if you can. It is really elegant. OTOH if you can find the Imai 1/120, which I have not built but have seen, that's as good a plastic ship model as you can find. Not the metal one, the plastic one.

Sounds like a great deal, although I would have picked up the Cutty Sark as well.  She makes a beautiful build.  I have all three in my stash waiting for me to get my chops up to snuff.  As the others have told you, the Chebec is a great model with the expected fine detailing of Imai molds.  I know you'll do a great job on them.

One thing I like about the Imai Chebec is that it is smaller than the Heller Chebec so that it's easier to transport but big enough to make into a fine model.  

Some good news, Heller is reissuing their 1/50 scale Chebec this month, Hobbylink has it for about $190 and the list is about $250.  Needless to say, I'm saving my pennies and saving my dimes so that I can buy a brand new Heller Chebec!

I've arranged to buy the Chebec (which I'm very much looking forward to!!) and the 1/96 Constitution...a couple of fine additions to the stash!

I should have them in my hands next Monday, though I may not get to work on either of them for awhile... my intention is to start in on the Katy of Norfolk ModelShipways solid hull kit after I finish the Santa Maria...we'll see how well I can handle a wooden kit!

Never built the Chebek, but have built both of the Revell kits.  Those  were very good kits.
