1/200 Yorktown Class?
Posted by tucchase on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 2:23 AM

Currently, there is rampant speculation, and drooling, over on ShipModeler Forum about Trumpeter making a 1/200 Yorktown, Enterprise, or Hornet.  This has been somewhat confirmed by Free Time Hobbies.  Since Trumpeter is already showing 1/200 scale planes from early WWII, including the B-25's, most of the bets are on the Hornet being first.

A carrier at that scale would be totally impressive,just imagine the details that could be added.I wouldn't build it,but I would love to see some of the results.

I hear ya, Tojo. I'd ooh and aah at it but wouldn't want to build it either. Just getting the aircraft right would be a huge challenge.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

Will Trumpeter provide financing, or will you need to arrange financing through your LHS?

Wow, a 1/200 Big E. How awesome would that be?

There is an aspect of this that makes me ask "Why not 1/144 then?"

Then, picturing that extra c-note in the price and how much longer, tall, wider just the box would be . . .

However, the "crossover" of being able to offer 1/144 aircraft kits would seem a bonus unto itself.

According to my over-quick ciphering at 1/144 CV-8 would be 64" LWL and 6.84" beam vice 46.2" LWL x 4.98" beam at 1/200

Still and all, 1/200 carriers could be well paired with 1/192 (1/16" = 1'-0") DD & DE kits.  Or an AOF.

There is a sample build at the New York Toy Fair from Merit.  Apparently Merit is connected with Trumpeter.  There is quite a discussion, with pics, of this model over at The Ship Model Forum.  Most are not happy with this sample, but are hopeful.

No most are not...If you are contemplating the purchase of this kit, you would be well advised to read the entire thread...

The manufacturers representative has said that they tried to correct the Trumpeter hull, but the photos he posted show clearly that they have simply duplicated the same bloated hull.

The thread is here...

HI;

I would hope that if they do it ,it is correct ! I still would not have the room or the inclination to build her . The ARIZONA is big enough ! Not to mention the 1/72 FLOWER class and the large scale LINDBERG FLETCHER that is being converted to a GEARING - FRAM .
