Crosley class APD
Posted by Fredlester on Saturday, March 9, 2013 6:28 PM

My father was on a Crosley class APD the Begor. I have never been able to find a kit. Anyone know of an APD Crosley class kit?

The Crosley class APDs were converted from Rudderow class DEs. Lindberg apparently made a model of the USS Rudderow. Don't know when or what scale. But if all else fails you could get the Rudderow kit and make the same conversion that the Navy did with the full size ships.

Actually, the Rudderow class had the same basic hull as the Buckleys, which might be much easier to find. The excellent Trumpeter USS England or any of the releases of the old Revell DE would be good bases for a not-overly-difficult conversion. (Of course, you'd still be stuck with finding spare or aftermarket landing craft and fittings.)

Good plans and drawings would be the key.

Iron Shipwright sells a 1:350 scale Buckley-class APD as the USS Lloyd

ironshipwrights.com/ships_350.html

It will include the LCVPs and fittings which you would otherwise need to source separately if you were to go the Trumpeter USS England route.

If you contact Jon Warneke  at ISW directly to order,  tell him what you want to do and he can likely provide the 5"/38s which were on the Rudderows.   He may also be able to provide some parts from their  Rudderow  kit (stack, bridge, etc).   Tell Jon that Ed Grune said to set you up with what you need.

The Lindberg Rudderow DE, sold as the DeLong is a nice kit for what is is.  Trouble is that it is 1:300 scale and you will have a difficult time sourceing add-ons in that *** scale.

In 1:700 scale,  check Niko models at Freetime Hobbies http://freetimehobbies.com/.    They too sell a DE-based APD,  but I'm not real sure from the small photo if it is a Buckley or Rudderow version
