Posted by radartec on Friday, March 15, 2013 9:58 AM

I building a 1964 version of the USS The Sullivans,DD537. In the book The Sullivans by Al Ross on page79 he lists item 1 under E13 as....AN/SPA-4A. I cannont find anything on this radar.Does anyone know anything about it ??

Probably a typo - more likely AN/SPS-4A.  I'll look at the BUSHIPS drawings when I get home tonight and let you know.

The SPA-4 was an early radar repeater  (the thing the watchstanders call "the scope").  The location indicated in the book shows a very likely spot for a surface search radar display.

Not a typo; I had it right in the book.  Here's a section of the Booklet of General Plans for THE SULLIVANS (DD 537) dated February 2, 1959:

Thanks for the explanation, Rick.

Thanks for the replys.I guess I had better think my questions over a little more !! As I try and put too many details on a 1/350 scale model, I get lost sometimes and over think some things.I must apoligze to you Al as I should have known you had it correct and as I was an ETR on a Fletcher Tin Can (USS INGERSOLL,DD652) and had worked on a repeater in this location many times. The repeater suffered many troubles due to the excessive gun fire we did in VN.

Hey, I wasn't sure either.  It's been 15 or so years since I did that one; had to check for myself, too!

The standard air search radar at that time was AN/SPS-6 or AN/SPS-12
