Could you ID this thing?

This is USS California and the "thing" is that clock like object on the front mast, just under the lookout structure. Does anybody know what it is?

Thanks...

It's called a range clock. It's not a time piece, but a signal to the distance in thousands of yards to the target. That was pretty common up until around Pearl Harbor.

Usually there was another one pointed aft. They had a small hand (10,000 yards) and a large hand (1,000 yards).

There was also a device on board correctly called a range clock that was more closely just that, but that's a more complicated story that indicates the arrival of fire control.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

And if you look closely at the "B" turret you will see a black band with numbers.   This is to indicate the bearing which the turret is firing.    The bearing band id on fore & aft turrets and along with the range clock information allows concentration of fire of the battle line.
