Here is a terrific article that will serve well for any Kriegsmarine modeling and painting.

Alex,

Here is a link to some photos of my U-Boat build here on the forum.  It is on page 20.

http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/7/t/150218.aspx

I was under a deadline so it didn't come out the way I hoped for, but all in all it is not bad.  I used Tamiya spray can colors and decanted them so that I could airbrush them.  After the paint, I gloss coated and let that dry a few days before weathering it with Model Masters enamel Burnt Umber mixed in varying degrees with Burnt Sienna.  I usually keep a list of the colors I use but at the moment I cannot find them.  You might also try www.uboat.net for ideas.

I'll keep looking for the colors list.

Its been a while since I built one but I think I used Testors  Navy Gunship Grey for the upper hull and  Anthricite grey for the lower hull.   I used Testers Non-buffing Gunmetal for the deck.

When it comes right down to it you could get away with just about any grey you have that looks close.

Towards the end of the war the Germans were running out of "official" paint and most of it was mixed and painted on by younger and younger solders who were in a hurry.

Plus the Atlantic was very unforgiving on its relentless attack on paint...  so faded and kinda rusty is the norm.

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Spoke with a friend who recently built two different 1/72 scale Revell U-Boats, the Atlantic Wolfpack version and the other kit with the quad anti-aircraft guns aft of the conning tower. To the best of his memory, he used XF-63 German Grey on the lower hull, XF-53 Neutral Grey for the sides of the upper hull and conning tower, and XF-24 Dark Grey for the decks. For the other version, he went with XF-24 for the lower hull, XF-76 IJN Grey for the upper hull and tower, and a mixture of XF-24 and XF-64 Red Brown (60-40) for the decks. I'm not a Kriegsmarine modeller, so I cannot say for certain which scheme is more accurate...

Posted by Alex Ramirez121 on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 3:32 PM

Hi there,

I just finished my first ship model, a revell 1/144 VIIC U-Boat. Could someone give me some tips on how to paint it, preferably with Tamiya Acrylics? Thank you So Much!!
