Transom for 1/96 Constitution
Posted by arnie60 on Saturday, June 1, 2013 12:24 PM

While waiting for goodies to arrive in the mail, I decided to paint the transom on the Revell 1/96 Constitution. Looking at the color scheme in the instructions I wondered if they were correct so I bent to the task of researching the transom. I couldn't find a match anywhere but went ahead and painted the colors in the instructions and removed the name since even if it is accurate that it was on there, it certainly would not have been raised like that. Now I am looking at what reminds me of the side of an old patent medicine wagon or the banner of an old circus midway.

So here's my first question. Can anyone educate me on if this is a "true" representation of some incarnation of the Constitution?

Second question: It should be pretty easy to see where I did retouches of the black. I am using Tamiya acrylics (flat black) and have had this problem before where a touch up 'sticks out' like these do. Why? Other than brush marks, the colors shouldn't look different like they do. How can I fix this? Dull coat doesn't seem to help. I primed and then air brushed the original coat of black.

Any and all help on this is greatly appreciated.

Looks awesome!  great detailing...

In regards to your question about the color match....I can't tell you WHY the black looks different, but I can say that I've noticed anytime I airbrush a color, and then do touch-ups with a brush (from the same bottle) it looks a little different.  My guess is that something about atomizing the paint changes the way it sits on the plastic.  Not much help, I'm afraid...  :)

Managed to answer my own question about the authenticity upon finally finding this tidbit:

I could still really, really use some advice on how to correct the touch up glitches. Please!

Airbrushes put down a very translucent coat of paint.  So, if you are covering a primer or any color other than a base color exactly the same as the color you are painting, you get a somewhat "shaded" color.  When you brush a color you get the equivalent of umpteen coats of airbrushed color.  That may be what you are seeing.  One way to avoid this is to put down a number of airbrushed coats.  However, you can also use this to good effect by shading hull paint to depict wear and whatever, a form of weathering.

Thanks Don. That makes total sense. I guess to compensate I will either have to brush paint the entire area that I am having problems w/ or re-do the entire transom, or...just live w/ it. I'll decide further down the line.

Consider the brush marks as touch up by the crew :-)  After all, they only had brushes in those days- no compressed air spray guns.
