Awesome News for 1/96 Constitution Fans
Posted by Grymm on Saturday, June 8, 2013 12:35 AM

I recently received an email from John over at scaledecks.com.  They are in the final fitting phase of a wood deck for Revell's 1/96 Constitution.  They are hoping to go into production by July.  Here's what they are going to have:

Wood Spar Deck

Wood Gun Deck

Wood inserts for the Ship's Boats (cut in a darker teak to contrast the ship's decks.

This is going to be an absolutely fantastic product for the Revell Kit.  We can all pretty much agree the deck has always been a sore spot to an otherwise beautiful kit.

Spread the word and keep an eye on their site.

LOL. I just bought Bluejackets scribed decking and had started to make some templates just the other day to cover the decks. The real irony here is that I actually posted recently on Force9's "revisiting the Revell Constitution" thread about Scaledecks, and the fact that they were seriously considering making them for the 1/96 Connie. But they were so vague at the time as to when that might be, that I went ahead and got the Bluejacket decking. They weren't very expensive ($3.50 for a 3.5" X 24" sheet), and I have more than enough that I can work on before doing the decks, that I think I will wait until their release. I am sure a laser cut deck will look a lot nicer than what I could do w/ templates and an exacto knife, not to mention inserts for the boats. And it just occurred to me that w/ their decking, the decks can be put in w/ out cementing them together first, which I haven't done yet w/ the spar deck.

Did they give any indication about the price?

That is cool.

I suspect when I finally open up my big Connie, I'll be at a point where making upgrades like a wooden deck will be on my *task list*....good to know there will be available parts for doing it!

Thanks, Phil!

I just got an email from John at Scaledecks. I'll quote it here.

"Absolutely true.

Looks like we are closing in on that release.  We will offer two decks in light wood to cover both the Spar Deck as well as the Gun Deck (which would be visible through gun openings and spar deck openings.)  We will also offer inserts for the ships' boats in darker teak wood, to give you wood grain on the benches if desired.

Our 1/350 Titanic sells for $129 for two large sheets (it fits both the Minicraft and Essex molds - it's a beast!) and the 1/96 Constitution is about the same amount of wood and complexity - so I figure a price in that same neighborhood would be about where we will release it at.

Figure on an announcement in July.

-- John D. --"

A bit steep for my pocket book, and probably many others, but then I have spent more than that on a night out and had nothing to show for it but a nice memory. So I probably will shell out the money. Maybe once they get rolling and make some sales the price will come down.

It is a bit steep, but for what a wood deck does to a plastic model kit, especially what it will do to the Revell Connie, for me is worth it.  I'm doing a second Connie (first is at my son's house) as a focal display in my living room, angled to show off the deck.  The wood deck will make it absolutely fantastic.

Now....how about that wood deck for Heller's HMS Victory?...
