Actually, the purpose of the wood stock on the anchor is to turn the one arm or the other of the crown of the anchor down into the seabed so that the fluke would dig in.

Once set, the stock helped hold the crown perpendicular to the seabed.  Which improved the hold of the anchor on the ground.    Depending upon which navy and which tradition is being followed, the anchor line is payed out with "scope"--which would be from 1: 5 to 1:7  So, in ten fathoms' of water,  50 to 70 fathoms of anchor cable would be payed out.    This length of line is enough to have a good portion horizontal along the seafloor.

This is also why a buoy is lashed to the crown of the anchor to float above the set anchor.  If the anchor set into rocks or a sticky mud bottom, after heaving the anchor cable in, the captain could "fish" the anchor by heaving up on the buoy line, to break the anchor out (or twist it out of the rocks).

With the anchor broken loose from the bottom, the entire weight was born by the messenger to the capstan, and the anchor would be "aweigh" which allows the ship to get under way .

The anchor rode was a cable made up of smaller ropes with the twists in alternating "hands."

So, right-handed ropes and left-laid to make a hawser, with three hawsers then right-laid to make a cable.  The alternating twists locked together, giving strength while also keeping flexibility..

Since such lines are not smooth, they were measured by circumference, so a First Rate can sound impressive for having 36" or 48" anchor cables, which would be a bit less than 12" or 16" in diameter

First let me say that your work is incredible. I was wondering what the scale is, and where you got your figures from.

My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

Then why don't you put all of your pics under ONE single solitary thread?

Ummm....maybe he's just having a hard time figuring out the way to do that.

Mr. Reid,

I'm sure I speak for many members of the Forum when I say that I've greatly enjoyed looking at your photos of your fine model of H.M.S. Victory.  It's a fine piece of work.

You have, however, now started more than thirty separate Forum threads - each containing one photo and its caption.

It would be much more convenient for the rest of the Forum if you wouldn't mind putting all the photos of your model in one thread.  It's easy to do - and probably less time-consuming than creating all these new threads.  Just click on any of the earlier threads, and put your latest picture and capture in the big "Reply" box at the bottom.  Then hit "Post," and you're done.

Also, I imagine that many other forum members would, like me, appreciate it if you would share some information about your model.  (A couple of modelers have posted questions - and, in one case, a small but appropriate correction - in reply to your posts, but you don't seem to have responded to them.)

I'm sure many of us would like to know such things as the scale of the model, the materials of which it's made, and whether it's based on a kit or scratchbuilt (and if the latter - to which set of plans).  Your figures in particular have excited some interest.  Could you tell us where you got them - or, if you made them yourself, perhaps give us a hint as to how?  This is a Forum about model building; I'm sure the membership would like to know something about how this model was built.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.
